Game 1 Kevin Gross retired 10 batters on strikeouts as the Pittsburgh Pirates bested the lifeless Montreal Expos 3 to 2 at THREE RIVERS STADIUM.
Gross (13-8) was very good in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Randy Kramer preserved the game for Gross, recording his 1st. Dennis Martinez (3-16) took the loss. Steve Bivens was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?’ he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.' Game 2 In a one-sided affair at THREE RIVERS STADIUM the final score was the Pittsburgh Pirates 9, the woeful Montreal Expos 3.
Pittsburgh took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. Pittsburgh ended up with 16 hits for the game while Montreal had 9.
Floyd Bannister (1-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Dave Lapoint (3-6) took the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 8 runs in 6 innings.
With this win, Pittsburgh has an 81-67 record. They have been 4-6 lately. Steve Bivens was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.' Game 3 Catcher Mike Fitzgerald hit a homerun and had 3 RBI at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 4.
Montreal claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. Frank Dipino was great in relief and recorded his 3rd save.
The victory went to Pascual Perez (13-12) who went 5 innings, allowing 4 runs. Jeff Robinson (0-2) was tagged with the loss. He allowed Montreal 7 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings of work. Game 4 John Smiley (9-9), with relief help from Randy Kramer, handcuffed the Montreal Expos batters at THREE RIVERS STADIUM in a day game. The Pittsburgh Pirates scored 6 runs for the win.
Andy Van Slyke had a big day at the plate. He belted a three-run homer in the 6th inning and tripled in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh finished with 9 hits while Montreal ended up with 5.
Ted Power (2-5) suffered the loss. He gave up 4 hits and no walks in 4 innings. Steve Bivens General Manager ALSCO Tacoma/Seattle
