Subject: SFN at CIN - NL West title hanging in the balance!
SF enters Riverfront Stadium 4 games behind the Reds, but with a chance to gain ground in a hurry. It's Don Robinson vs John Farrell in the opener. Giants draw first blood in the 3rd when Will Clark double-played a run home with the bases loaded and no one out. Not the clutch hit we were looking for, but we're happy with the lead. Don Robinson, so solid all year, is cruising along nicely until the bottom of the 4th. Reds get homers in that frame from Paul O'Neill, Jeff Hamilton, AND Jody Reed to take a 3-1 lead. Giants knot it back up in the next inning with a two-run homer by Will The Thrill (RBIs #99 and #100). Still tied in the bottom of the 9th, Craig Lefferts on the mound for SF. He retires Hamilton and Reed easily, but Bill Doran strokes a single. Rattled, Lefferts throws a wild pitch and Doran scoots to 2nd base. Barry Larkin doubles him home for the walk-off win, absolutely huge for the hometown Reds. Their magic number is now just 1! Game 2 features Bryn Smith of the Giants and Tim Belcher of the Reds. Cincy opens the scoring on a two-run shot by Von Hayes in the third. Hayes popped his second homer of the game in the 6th, giving the Reds a 3-0 lead. And amazingly, Hayes slugs his THIRD homer of the game in the 7th, giving Cincy a commanding 4-0 lead. Belcher is dominant through six, throwing nothing but goose eggs. Skipper Alan Boodman, always confident in his bullpen, goes to Norm Charlton for the 7th and 8th. Normie throws two shutout innings and strikes out 3. We are in the 9th, the Reds three outs away from clinching the NL West. Enter Rob Dibble. He retires Robby Thompson, gives up a double to Fred Lynn, gets out number two from Juan Uribe, and then walks Darren Daulton. Two on, two out, Dibble kicks and delivers....it's a harmless fly ball, Devon White is retired. Cincy takes it 4-0, and clinches the division title! Von Hayes is the modern-day Reggie Jackson, accounting for all runs on his three dingers! Congratulations to the Reds, it has been an exciting pennant race all year. Cincy was incredibly consistent, never really stumbling all year. They are very worthy champions, and we wish them well in the playoffs! Must've been a whale of a post-game celebration as the hung-over Reds lost the third game 8-5 and the fourth game 7-1. Kevin Mitchell ends his stellar season with 55 HRs and 135 RBIs!
