Game 1 Joe Magrane shut down the Montreal batters on just 3 hits at BUSCH STADIUM as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the hapless Montreal Expos in 10 innings 1 to 0.
The score was a scoreless tie after nine. St. Louis won the game in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Magrane lined a one-base hit. One out later, Ozzie Smith stepped up to the plate and he stroked a base-hit. Pedro Guerrero then singled giving St. Louis the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. St. Louis had a total of 7 hits for the game.
Magrane (11-12) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Frank Dipino (3-10) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 3 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning. Game 2 In a close game it was the St. Louis Cardinals 4, the Montreal Expos 2 at BUSCH STADIUM.
St. Louis scored 2 runs in the decisive 5th inning when they came up with 4 base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Overall St. Louis out-hit Montreal 10 to 6.
The victory went to Cris Carpenter (1-3) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run. Doug Jones gained credit for his 26th save. The loss was charged to Dennis Martinez (3-17). He was knocked around by St. Louis , allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. Game 3 Jose Deleon didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning at BUSCH STADIUM where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the woeful Montreal Expos 2 to 1.
Deleon (14-6) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just 1 hit and no walks in 6 innings. The right-handed Deleon had his no-hit bid broken up by Dave Lapoint who singled with one out in the 6th inning. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Doug Jones recorded his 27th save. Lapoint (4-7) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Game 4 Catcher Tony Pena collected 2 extra-base hits as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the hopeless Montreal Expos by the score of 4 to 3 at BUSCH STADIUM.
St. Louis had the winning rally in the 8th inning plating 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Pedro Guerrero began the rally when he drew a walk. Terry Pendleton stepped up to the plate and he doubled. Dave Anderson then doubled. St. Louis banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.
