Twins take opener 4-2 as Bert Blyleven wins 16th game of the season. Minnesota jumped to an early 1-0 in the 1st as Kirby Puckett hit a solo homer. The Twins added a run in the 3rd as Dave Gallagher reached 2nd on a Jose Gonzalez error, moved to 3rd on a Puckett base hit and Gallagher then scored on a Kent Hrbek ground out.
Oakland scored in the 4th after 3 consecutive singles by Mark McGwire, Carney Lansford and Terry Steinbach. The Twins added an insurance run in the 6th when Jim Dwyer hit a solo homer. Oakland added a run in the 7th to make it 3-2 as Ricky Henderson reached on a force out grounder. Henderson then stole base #47 and cruised into 3rd on the Brian Harper throwing error. Henderson scored on a Tommy Herr sac fly.
Minnesota added another run in the 9th off Curt Young as Doug Baker doubled and scored on a Dave Gallagher double. Jeff Reardon entered in the 9th to face Henderson-Herr-Baines and McGwire. Herr was the only base runner with a base hit as Reardon picked up save #44.
