CONGRATS Alan another great job
From: Alan Boodman <alan.boodman@...> To: _SmileyList <SmileyList@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 10:22 PM Subject: [SmileyList] 1989 World Series recaps (The Jays were run by interim manager Mike Tomeo for Game 1; I handled both teams the rest of the way.) Game 1: Tim Belcher gave up a pair of early runs but the Reds came back against Dave Stieb and tied it up in the 4th. The pitchers maintained control through 7 innings, at which point the Toronto defense went to pieces: errors by McGriff & Marshall contributed to 4 unearned runs and the Reds were able to put 8 markers on the board in the final two frames. Final score: 10-4. Jeff Hamilton and Bill Doran led the Cincy offense with a combined 8 3 5 5 boxscore line. The highlight for the Jays was seeing Lance Parrish steal a base. ============================== Game 2: The Reds completed the 2-game sweep in Toronto, letting the Jays score first again and then coming back despite (again) the middle of the lineup doing practically nothing. Bud Black had his first of two abbreviated and diappointing starts but Tom Henke took charge with 7 K's in 3.1 relief innings and kept the Jays in the contest. Down 4-1 in the 9th, Toronto got a 2-run homer from Greg Briley and put a scare into the Reds but Schiraldi & Dibble combined to retire the final two batters and end the game. ============================== Game 3: Playing with some desperation, the Jays went into Cincy and emerged with a 4-3 win that was similar in reverse to Game 2. CIN starter Jose Rijo allowed 3 singles in the Toronto 5th and all 3 came around to score. Jimmy Key, of all people, had a quality start (6 IP, 0 ER) but the team with the second best bullpen ERA (1.97 in 1989) in the history of either league almost had a fatal meltdown and the Reds stormed back with 3 late runs. John Kruk pinch-hit to open the 9th and walloped a home run off of Duane Ward, making the score 4-3, and Cincy then got 2 more hits before Juan Agosto induced a groundout from Rolando Roomes to finally nail down the save. The Jays prevailed despite being outhit 10-5. ============================== Game 4: The first and only home team victory of the series, a pitchers duel between Dave Stieb & Tom Browning. Cincy's scoring for the day was confined to the second inning, with Eric Davis leading off with a home run and Bill Doran delivering an RBI single. That was one more run than Browning needed, his only blemish for the day coming with 2 outs in the 7th via a Briley double that plated Parrish. Calvin Schiraldi earned the save with 2.1 innings of hitless relief. Appearing at the plate for the first time in his 11-season career, former collegiate outfielder Stieb went 1 for 2 with a double. ============================== Game 5: Desperate again, especially after blowing an early 6-2 lead, Toronto scored the final 5 runs of the game and lived to play another day. Final score: 11-8. Very few of the 9 pitchers who took the mound today escaped unscathed but one who did was the unheralded John Cerutti, who kept the Reds off the board for the last 4 innings and earned the crucial victory. There were 5 doubles, 2 triples (both by Tony Fernandez) and 4 homers among the 28 hits that were flying everywhere. One of those 28 came off the bat of Pat Borders, making him 1 for 1 in the Series after an 0 for 16 performance during the regular season, the 5th most at bats ever in a season for a player who failed to get even one hit. ============================== Game 6: Jimmy Key tried for his second win but wasn't effective, nor was the Toronto offense who turned 13 baserunners into 11 LOB and came up on the short end of a 5-2 score. Cincy got 9 hits from 8 different players and John Farrell raised his record to 2-0 with 5.2 innings spent mainly dodging bullets from Toronto batters. The Reds take the series 4 games to 2, becoming the first team to win 3 consecutive World Series. Boxscores and stats are here: http://smileyleague.org/postseas/1989ws.jsp Alan |
