Subject: Reds @ Padres

The Reds complete the sweep, but in ugly fashion: another typical bottom-of-the-9th choke in game 2 followed by a slugfest in the finale.

This Cincy team is going to score runs in 1990, but if the defense remains totally unable to convert an x-play (and with this mediocre rotation after Rijo) we are going to give up a bunch of runs too....

=======================================

Game 2: Joe Oliver gave Tom Browning a 2-0 lead via a double and a sac fly, but the defense (Browning's own error and our second E1 on a bunt in 2 games) gave both of those runs back to San Diego in the 6th.  Mariano Duncan put us back in front when he doubled Von Hayes home in the 7th but Randy Myers (single, walk) and that wonderful Cincy defense (blown x single+error, passed ball) somehow limited themselves to choking up ONLY the tying run in the bottom of the 9th.

San Diego didn't manage a baserunner in the 2 extra frames and Eddie Williams did his job as a pinch-hitter vs. Craig Lefferts, greeting the lefty pitcher with a ballpark home run in the 11th.  Final score: 4-3.

=======================================

Game 3: The Reds walloped SDN starter Andy Benes for 5 runs in the first, the key hit a bases-clearing triple by Von Hayes.  But Greg 'Not W.' Harris had a nervous debut of his own (walk, walk, wild pitch sandwiched around some surgical hits) and the score was 5-4 after just one inning.

Steve Crawford fared little better in the second than Benes had in the first, as the Reds tallied 3 more times with Hayes notching his 4th & 5th RBIs of the game just 2 innings in (he would stop there, as would the rest of the offense).

Finally the wind changed direction and Harris allowed just 1 more run to the Padres and lasted 7 innings, and the SDN bullpen permitted just 2 more runs to the Reds.

Final score: 10-5 although the home team posted an 11-9 advantage in hits.  Non-hitting pitcher Harris hadn't appeared at the plate since 1982 but was smart enough not to actually swing the bat; he drew a pair of walks and scored once.

=======================================

Stat Notes: Neither team broke even the abysmal .600 mark in x-percentage; the Reds laced 8 doubles in 3 games and have a good shot at leading the N.L. in that category in 1990; Eric Davis coughed up more runs on 1 fly ball than he created at the plate (0 for 10 despite 0 strikeouts), and after homering in his first AB of the season Chris Sabo matched Davis's 0 for 10 performance; the Brothers Gwynn didn't fare too well for the Padres, combining to go 2 for 15.
