Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 1 (and Week 2 CM)

The Orioles start the 1990 season in Toronto with high hopes and leave in last place.

Game 1: TOA 6, BAA 4

The Opening Day crowd in Toronto saw a thrilling seesaw battle where almost every half inning had a scoring threat. The thrills started in the bottom of the first, as Mitch Webster greeted Jim Abbott with a double and scored on a Fred McGriff single.  Baltimore answered with an RBI single by Brady Anderson to tie the game 1-1 after 2, and another by Cal Ripken Jr. to take a 2-1 lead in the third against Toronto starter Dave Stieb.  Kelly Gruber led off the bottom of the 3rd  with a triple, and McGriff came through again; the Blue Jays then loaded the bases with one out but failed to capitalize.  But the Jays retook the lead 3-2 in the 4th when Tony Fernandez beat Mickey Tettleton’s tag for an inside-the-park home run.  Randy Milligan answered with a more traditional homer to tie the game 3-3 through the 5th.  Two “great” and one “nice” play in the 6th gave Stieb the game’s first 1-2-3 inning.  A sac fly by Ripken put the O’s back on top in the 7th, but Toronto finally put together a big inning keyed by Glenallen Hill’s 2-run double off reliever Mark Williamson to take a 6-4 lead that held to the end.  Toronto came out on top despite leaving 10 runners on base.

Game 2: TOA 7, BAA 3

The scoring again started with a double and a McGriff RBI single in the first; a groundout RBI off the O’s Pete Harnisch made it a 2-0 Toronto lead.  A Fernandez triple in the 3rd and George Bell’s 4th inning home run padded the Jays’ lead to 4-0, and Mark Lee doubled in two more in the 6th.  Meanwhile, Toronto’s Pat Combs took a 2-hit shutout into the 8th before fatigue and a Juan Samuel double finally gave Baltimore their first run of the game.  Even that was offset by Lance Parrish’s home run in the 8th off rookie reliever Curt Schilling.  Baltimore made it interesting with back-to-back 9th inning triples before Duane Ward shut the door.

Game 3: TOA 3, BAA 2 (11)

This time the O’s scored first, as Milligan homered again for a brief 1-0 lead, but an RBI triple by Gruber evened the score 1-1 after 1 inning.  Lefty starters David wells and Jeff Ballard then settled in, and the game remained tied until Hill led off the 5th with a solo shot.  Baltimore’s Mickey Tettleton gunned down Webster on a steal attempt with 85% success rate, saving a run that would have scored on Fernandez’s subsequent double.  Tettleton’s 7th inning homer tied the game at 2-2.  The Orioles missed a chance to take the lead in the 9th due to poor roster planning; with no other catchers on the bench, the leadfooted Tettleton was thrown out at home, and another in the 11th when Juan Samuel hit a feeble pop-up with the bases loaded.  In the bottom of the 11th, fatigued reliever Mark Williamson walked two batters, and Webster ended the game with a two-out single.
