Game 1 In a 14 inning affair Randy Tomlin went 7 and two third solid innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 5 to 2 at Three Rivers Stadium.
The Expos scored 2 runs with two outs in the ninth on a Jim Presley homerun off of Bill Landrum. Pittsburgh ended up winning it in the 14th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Lavalliere keyed the rally when he ripped a one-base hit. Jay Bell stepped into the batter's box and he slapped a single. After another out, Billy Hatcher came to bat and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' off Mel Rojas resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Pittsburgh had 13 hits overall, while Montreal had 9.
Bob Kipper (1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Frank Dipino (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2 and 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits and no walks. Game 2 Right fielder Bobby Bonilla smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates bested the Montreal Expos 5 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Bonilla provided much of the offense. He ripped a solo home run in the 4th inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 6th inning and lined a base-hit in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh had 9 hits for the night.
Zane Smith (1-0) allowed 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Smith got help from Bill Landrum who was credited with his 1st save. Bill Sampen (0-1) absorbed the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk. Game 3 Rick Schu hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates embarrassed the Montreal Expos by the lopsided score of 12 to 1.
Pittsburgh promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Jay Bell keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Barry Bonds dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Schu then doubled. Bobby Bonilla came up and he doubled. That early run support was enough for Neal Heaton (1-0) and Pittsburgh . For the game Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal 13 to 5.
Bob Kipper earned the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Chris Nabholz (0-1). He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks.
