Subject: Reds @ Mets

The Reds get back on the beam after last week's disaster, taking 3 games from the Mets thanks to a pair of surprising comebacks.  Both New York and Cincinnati displayed defenses that would have embarrassed a pee-wee league team....

Game 1: No errors in this one despite plenty of blown x's, as home runs were the name of the game.  Cincy starter Mike Witt coughed up a pair of low split-card gophers along with a critical (and nearly impossible) ballpark single and the Mets took a 4-1 lead and appeared as if they would keep it even though the Reds got hits galore off of Frank Viola.  But, just as last week, we just couldn't turn generous amounts of runners into any actual runs.

Finally in the 7th one of Cincy's few clutch hitters stepped up; Gary Ward delivered a 3-run homer that tied the contest and vanquished Viola.  Even more amazingly, Wally Whitehurst came to the mound and Mariano Duncan greeted him with a 'Perfect Sambito' which tied the gopher count at 2 for each team but better yet made the score 5-4.  Rob Dibble held that narrow lead for his 3rd save of the year.

Game 2: The Keystone Cops took the field today, as both teams produced one defensive howler after another.  The final score -- in earned runs -- was 3-3, but the NYN defense came up slightly smaller and the Reds were able to prevail by the count of 7-5.

The Mets took a 4-0 lead early thanks to 2 gift runs and the NYN batters were generally abusing Tom Browning.  But the New York defense proceeded to sabotage David Cone nicely and Cone himself donated 5 free passes in 6+ innings, and the Reds stormed back to take a 5-4 lead in the 4th.  But not for long: a clutch hit from Dick Schofield tied the game immediately and Browning was given the hook.

The game was decided in the 8th by an unlikely source and an even more unlikely roll; ex-Met Brian Giles pinch-hit and found a 2-run homer on 1-12!  Keith Comstock ran into serious trouble in the bottom of the 9th but Dibble got the final out to preserve the win.

Game 3: Cincy starter Greg Harris was told before the game that he would get no help from the massively overworked bullpen squad and somehow he managed not to require any help.  Harris took a 2-hitter into the 9th, the offense banged out 15 hits (nearly all of them singles) despite shutting down entirely after the 3rd inning, and Harris held on for a 6-2 win.

Harris settled for a 4-hitter, walking 2 and fanning 8.  Ward led the attack with 4 hits and is now batting .474 in part-time play and N.L. home run leader (yes, really) Chris 'Kingman' Sabo got a few singles for a change and raised his average almost to .240.
