Subject: Cubs @ Pirates

At 3RS, it was an early season showdown between two of the contenders in the NL East.

G1 The Cubs built a 4-2 lead after 7 innings due primarily to a 3rd inning 3-run HR by Carmelo Martinez and the pitching of Greg Maddux (5 2/3 9 2 2 1 4).  In the 8th the Pirates got a run back when Sid Bream reached on a error by Darryl Akerfelds and eventually came around to score on a bases-loaded walk to Jeff King.  Since the Pirates had LH bats due up, the Cubs brought in Paul Assenmacher with the one-run margin to close out the 9th.  After an error allowed a runner to reach, Andy Van Slyke grounded out.  Bobby Bonilla then sent Pirates' fans home ecstatic when he pounded a pitch well up into the RF seating.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 4
WP- Landrum 1-0, LP- Assenmacher 1-1
HR- Martinez (3), LaValliere (1), Bonilla (4)

G2 The Cubs came out swinging against spot starter Sergio Valdez with 3 runs in the 1st inning.  With 2 outs, Mark Grace began the rally with a triple.  Martinez and Mark Grace followed with home runs to conclude an explosive 3-batter stretch.  Chicago added a run in the 4th and Greg Swindell (8 1/3 5 3 3 1 6) carried a 4-1 lead into the 9th.  However, in the final inning, Gary Redus singled to lead off the inning, and one out later Barry Bonds brought Pittsburgh within a run with his 2nd HR of the contest.  Ted Power was then summoned from the Cubs' bullpen and immediately walked Don Slaught.  Power recovered and retired Rick Schu and Bonilla to even the series at a game apiece.

Final Score: Chicago 4, Pittsburgh 3
WP- Swindell 4-2, LP- Valdez 0-1, SV- Power (5)
HR- Martinez (4), Grace (1), Bonds 2 (4)

G3 For the second consecutive game the Cubs had a big first inning- this time scoring 5 times off of Zane Smith (2/3 4 5 5 1 1) -who didn't survive the inning.  In this contest, the Cubs cruised to a win behind Mike Bielecki (5 2/3 7 1 1 1 3) and 2 relievers.  Even though Chicago only outhit PIttsburgh 8-7, the Cubs' 3 home runs were too much to overcome.  MVP candidate Ryne Sandberg hit his 6th HR and scored 3 of Chicago's 7 runs.  Martinez homered for the 3rd consecutive game and appears to enjoy Three Rivers Stadium quite a bit.

Final Score: Chicago 7, Pittsburgh 1
WP- Bielecki 1-1, LP- Smith 2-1
HR- Martinez (5), Sandberg (6), Dunston (1)

G4 Chicago needed extra innings in this one to end up taking the series.  3B sub Jack Howell singled to start the 12th inning and was advanced on Steve Wilson's sacrifice. One out later, Sandberg's single brought Howell home.  Ted Power retired 3 of the 4 batters faced to record the save.   Barry Bonds completed a tremendous series with a 3-for-4 performance for performance.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 4, 12 innings
WP- Wilson 1-0, LP- Parker 0-1, SV- Power (6)
HR- Bonds (5), Walton (2), Bonilla (5)

The key to this series was the 1st innings.  Total 1st inning scoring: Chicago 10, Pittsburgh 1
