Subject: Reds @ Pirates

Aside from our inexplicable mediocrity in home games, the biggest mystery of the season for the Reds is: why does a bullpen that sucks *SO* bad get so much work?  In a series that we could very easily have swept, the Reds lose 2 out of 3 by coughing up critical late runs all 3 times and losing in our opponent's final at bat twice....

Game 1: Pittsburgh's Tom Candiotti has struggled so far in 1990 but he always saves his best for the Reds, and today was no exception.  Mike Witt gophered away our quick 1-0 lead immediately but we finally came back on Chris Sabo's 2-run single in the 7th and took the lead again.  Which Rob Dibble (1 IP, FIVE hits allowed) choked away a few seconds later.

The Reds never threatened again and completed the choke in the bottom of the 10th when the first 2 batters of the inning doubled.  Witt and Candiotti had about equal starts, but the bullpens varied drastically in their effectiveness (see also game 3).  Speaking of chokers, the Cincy offense could only muster 4 hits in 10 innings.

================================================

Game 2: Tom Browning and Rick Reed both pitched reasonably well today, but neither one got a decision even though Browning worked into the 9th.  The contest was tied at 1 when Sabo came through again (chronic massive underachiever Sabo gets very few hits, but at least this year they are all big hits) with a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th.  Which Browning and the bullpen (Charlton this time) entirely choked away a few seconds later.  What a surprise.

But it was a surprise that the Reds didn't fold up altogether for a change, and Gary Ward's sac fly in the 10th plated Barry Larkin and Dibble retired the Pirates in order to preserve the 5-4 victory.

================================================

Game 3: And now for something completely the same: starters Jose Rijo and Zane Smith put up nearly identical numbers despite Cincy's RHB-loaded lineup, with the Reds trailing nearly the entire game until (guess who?) Sabo came up with a clutch 2-run single in the 8th to tie the contest.  So of course the bullpen choked the game away a few seconds later (Charlton again) and the Reds lose again, 4-2.

Alan
