Game 1 Alex Cole had 4 hits and scored 3 times and Greg Maddux pitched a complete game shutout as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated the Montreal Expos 9 to 0 at Wrigley Field.
Maddux(5-2) looked very much in control throughout the night. He allowed only 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.18 to 1.89. Chicago NL finished with 19 hits in the victory.
The loss was charged to Joe Grahe(1-2). He was hit hard and gave up 15 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Game 2 Weather was good! (Single 1-18, HR 1-20) And it showed… Ryne Sandberg launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated the Montreal Expos 15 to 8 at Wrigley Field.
It was a good day for Chicago NL thanks to Sandberg. He launched a three-run homer in the 2nd inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the 4th inning. Chicago NL bats were hot in the 2nd inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 5 hits and the 6th inning which saw them score 6 runs on 5 hits. Overall Chicago NL out-hit Montreal 18 to 15.
Mike Jeffcoat(3-0) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Jeffcoat got help from Darrel Akerfelds who earned his 1st save. The loss was charged to Tommy Greene(0-7). He got hammered, allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings. Game 3 Mark Grace had 2 base hits and Mike Bielecki whiffed 11 batters as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos 5 to 4.
Bielecki(3-2) earned his pay with a solid performance for Chicago NL. He went 7 innings and surrended up 7 hits and 1 walk. Chicago NL out-hit Montreal for the game, 11 hits to 7.
Darrel Akerfelds recorded his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Dennis Martinez(2-4). He was knocked around by Chicago NL, allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.
Thomas Treece was asked about the performance of Bielecki, 'He had his good stuff out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.' Game 4 At Wrigley Field the Chicago NL Cubs registered 5 runs in the 2nd inning and outdistanced the Montreal Expos by a final score of 11 to 7.
Andre Dawson enjoyed a big day at the plate. He tripled which scored a run in the 1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 2nd inning and laced a one-base hit in the 7th inning. Chicago NL ended up with 14 hits for the game while Montreal had 11.
Mike Harkey(2-2) was the winner allowing 6 runs in 5 innings. Dave Lapoint(0-2) was given the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 2 innings of work.
