Subject: Reds @ Giants

HAL's mutilation of the Cincy defense (and bullpen) this year has been nothing short of criminal, as was so clearly illustrated throughout this series.  Kevin 'The Butcher' Mitchell did *far* better on x plays in these 4 games than Barry '1' Larkin, as just one example.  We won the first two contests anyway, but then once again (actually, twice again) proved that nobody can choke like the Reds can....

Game 1: The San Francisco defense was nearly as bad as the Reds' today, the Giants committing errors while we were giving up hits.  The teams combined for 8 runs, only 2 of which were earned.  Tom Browning went the distance for Cincy, allowing 0 earned runs and 0 walks in today's 7-1 win.  The key blow for the offense was Von Hayes' Grand Slam in the 5th which was preceded by 2 SFN errors and an IW.  With that big hit, Hayes is now finally flirting with the gaudy .200 mark in batting average in 1990.

=====================================

Game 2: Mike Witt tried to match Browning's CG but began hemorrhaging badly with a 6-2 lead in the 8th.  Rob Dibble threw one pitch in the bottom of the 9th and preserved the suddenly close 6-5 win.  Mitchell supplemented his Gold Glove fielding with a pair of gophers today but it wasn't quite enough to get the Giants a W.

=====================================

Game 3: Cincy starter Danny Jackson had an incredible outing: he was incredibly bad at allowing baserunners (12 in 7 IP) but also incredible in keeping them from scoring.  Jackson took a shutout, about 10 LOB, and a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th, at which point the last of his few molecules of luck ran out.  The game-tying rally was of course keyed by another blown-x single.  Norm Charlton squelched that rally eventually, and newcomer Randy Hennis came on to handle the final frames.

In real life, Hennis allowed just 1 hit in 11 IP; today he faced 6 batters (only 1 of whom rolled on the pitcher's card, natch) and allowed FOUR hits.  The one roll on Hennis's empty card resulted in -- you guessed it -- a blown-x hit by Bill Doran who, sadly, is no Kevin Mitchell with the glove.  Final score: Reds choke 3-2 in 10.

=====================================

Game 4: Thanks to an unearned run we allowed earlier in the game, the Reds entered the bottom of the 9th tied at 3.  Not satisfied with critical unearned runs, surgical singles to non-hitting pitchers (among others), and permitting 2 bases on a *failed* hit & run play, the Reds choked up back-to-back blown-x hits to open the 9th and lost on a bunt.  Nobody does it better.  Final score: 4-3.
