My 2nd trip to the Big Apple this week (Boston was in Ny as well) did not go as well as the first as the Padres hold on fora win in the middle game.  All but two of the Mets runs in the series came via homer (or missed hr in the case of game 3). Game 1: Atlee Hamaker made his first start of the year and was doing ok until he caught the Padres famous bug, homeritis.  2 homers in the 4th put the Mets up 3-0.  They added another 2 run homer later to make 5 of 6 runs via the homer.  Padres finally broke through in the 7th against Gooden to make the final 6-2. game 2: Shawn Abner came into the game making 3 of 4 x plays in cf. Today he was 0-3 allowing 3 of the Mets 8 hits. This one was tied at 1 going into the 8th inning. The Mets run was, surprise, a 4th inning homer and the Padres got a Sheffield single.  In the 8th Reynolds reached on a Johnson error and later scored on a Whitehurst wild pitch to give the Padres the 2-1 lead. The literally had to hang on in the bottom of the 8th.  Abner's 3rd hit allowed (a double)  put the tying run in scoring position. Mark Carreon then got a 4 on his bp homer split. Luckily for the Padres, Shea is only a 1-3 chance and the Padres hung on for the 2-1 win. game 3:  Padres had a 2-1 lead early with the Mets run yet another homer. Mets tied it in the 5th on a single,ground out, single.  Mets broke the tie in the 7th. Mets got 2 runners in scoring position with only one ball put in play a few feet in front of the plate.  HBP, sac bunt, walk and wild pitch did the trick. Strawberry then settled for a 2 run double and McReynolds followed with his own double (both on missed hr chances) and the Mets had the 5-2 win. The Padres team average dropped 11 points on the week as they only had 1 game with more than 6 hits on the week (and that was 8).
