Game 1 Ken Caminiti had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the hapless Montreal Expos by the score of 9 to 1 at Busch Stadium.
St. Louis wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. That early scoring was all that Jim Clancy (5-6) needed. St. Louis had 10 hits for the game and Montreal had 7.
Tommy Greene (0-10) ended up with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 5 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Game 2 Catcher Mike Fitzgerald had 2 base hits at Busch Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 7 to 2.
Montreal scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. That early scoring was all that Dennis Martinez (5-5) needed. Both teams ended up with 7 hits on the night.
Jamie Moyer recorded his 1st save. Jose Deleon (1-8) took the loss. Despite losing, he struck out 10 Montreal batters in 6 innings. Game 3 Todd Zeile blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Montreal Expos in 12 innings by a score of 6 to 5 at Busch Stadium.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. St. Louis won it in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Willie McGee started the rally when he reached on an error. Scott Fletcher struck out, unable to help the rally. Zeile then smashed a two-run homer making St. Louis victorious to the delight of the home town crowd. St. Louis finished with 10 hits while Montreal ended up with 7.
Andy McGaffigan (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Bill Sampen (0-5) in relief. Game 4 49,829 fans were treated to a fine game at Busch Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Cardinals won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
St. Louis had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. The key at-bat was by Milt Thompson who elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he tripled plating two runs. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The winning pitcher was Bob Tewksbury (9-4) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings. Tewksbury got help from Lee Smith who earned his 13th save. John Wetteland (0-1) ended up with the loss.
'Some losses are harder to take than others' Steve Bivens lamented after the game. 'This was one of them.'
