Previous message                 Next message Message #: 26015 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Mar 19, 2012 Subject: Reds @ Cubs The Reds endure another surgical nightmare of a series in which HAL destroyed every pitcher who took the mound for Cincy, with one minor exception.  Despite our disadvantage on defense the Cincinnati offense did not lack for opportunities, but all you need to know about how those opportunities ended up is LOB - CIN: **40**, CHN: 19....     Game 1: HAL started slowly, allowing Tim Belcher to pitch effectively for almost the entire game (the Cubs got only 5 hits and 3 walks today) but that just set us up for the Big Choke As Usual.  In the final half-inning of the day, Chicago got all 3 of those walks, an HBP and 2 of those 5 hits including -- but of course! -- a 3-run gopher.  Final score: 5-2.  Final LOB: 10-3.  Guess who had the 10.   Game 2: Danny Jackson was summoned to the operating table after two accidentally scoreless innings and the Cubs built a 7-0 lead before the Reds stormed back in order to fall just short.  Not short enough to add to our league-worst record in 1 run games, but almost.  Final score: 9-7.  The Reds had an equal number of hits to the Cubs, more total bases and walks, but a somewhat unequal number of clutch hits.   Game 3: Fortunately for the Reds, surgeons take an occasional day off.  Mike Witt had a no-hitter going for a long time and allowed only a cheap BP single, super-cheap BP homer (1-20) and one honest hit as the Reds won by the score of 5-1 and it could easily have been 10 (LOB: 11-3).   Game 4: Back from his day on the golf course, tanned and well-rested, HAL stuck it to the Reds again today.  While the teams were even in hits and walks, the same could hardly be said for total bases (and, of course, clutch hits).  Cincy got nothing but singles while the Cubs pounded out extra bases galore.  Final score: 8-4 and 10 more LOB for the Reds.   Alan
