Subject: Blue Jays @ Brewers

If the Jays merely played at our talent level in road games we'd be leading the East by a good margin, but it doesn't matter who we play away from home -- Toronto struggles against first place teams and last place teams alike.  This series fit the usual pattern of unaccountable and unwarranted abuse of Toronto pitchers, but we got a highly UNusual outcome and actually (narrowly) won a series!....

Game 1: Mitch Webster opened today's game with a triple (HR 1-17) and unsurprisingly failed to score, correctly indicating how things would continue to go (LOB - TOA: 10, MLA - 4) and Bud Black wasted our comeback but Duane Ward kept the Brewers off the board after the choke and the Jays amazingly registered a 1-run win when Freddie Mac solo-homered in the 9th.  Final score: 4-3.

Teddy Higuera pitched into the 9th and fanned 9 Jays (probably all 9 with runners in scoring position) but his own error provided what turned out to be a costly unearned run.

======================================

Game 2: Back to our regularly scheduled program: the unluckiest pitcher in the majors took the mound and again (despite a card which should result in fewer hits than IP and very few extra base hits) Pat Combs was pounded for a mere 11 hits and 18 total bases in 4.1 innings against the A.L.'s lowest-scoring offense.  And why not?  Shouldn't they get to enjoy the fun just like every other team?

Tom Henke mopped up the lost cause and put up similar disastrous numbers (2.2 IP, 10 total bases).  Final score: 7-2.

======================================

Game 3: Yet another one of the many TOA pitchers (Todd Stottlemyre) with a hyper-inflated ERA took the mound today and got blown sky-high again.  At one point the Jays were outhitting Milwaukee 11-2 but then it was Surgery Time.  Stottlemyre cut the Toronto lead to 7-6 and was finally replaced by ineffective bullpen mates Henke and Ward, who combined to allow 6 more hits -- but somehow no runs -- and preserved the suddenly close victory!

Dave Parker gophered a pair for the Brewers while Tony Fernandez drove in 3 for the Jays.  Starters Stottlemyre & Robinson were abused for 18 hits and all 13 runs in 10 combined IP but the bullpens went scoreless.

Particularly effective was MLA's Mike Fetters, who faced the minimum 10 batters in his 3.1 IP (allowing just one batter to reach on an error then getting a DP) and struck out three Jays ***ON NINE PITCHES*** in the 9th, matching the unbreakable record.

Alan
