Subject: BAA @ SEA Week 9

Baltimore gets outscored 21-13 but still manages to split a four-game series with the Mariners.

Game 1: BAA 4, SEA 3

Baltimore’s Mickey Tettleton opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run homer driving in Cal Ripken in the 3rd,  but Rex Hudler’s aggressive baserunning cut the lead to 2-1 after 3.  That was the only scoring through 6.  With the bases loaded and one out in the 5th, Seattle yanked starter Brian Holman in favor of Ray Searage, who struck out Tettleton and defused the threat.  But déjà vu struck in the seventh as Tettleton again drove in Ripken with a two-out homer.  The bottom of the frame brought more déjà vu as surprisingly effective Orioles starter Bob Milacki gave way to Mark Williamson, who defused a bases-loaded, one-out Mariners rally with a key strikeout of Dave Henderson.  The O’s bullpen gave up two in the 8th to narrow the lead to 4-3, but Gregg Olson came in for the 9th and earned his 11th save.  Milacki elevated his record to 2-9.

Game 2: SEA 8, BAA 0

Seattle scored two in the first before Orioles starter Jim Abbott retired a single batter.  The Mariners added two more in the third and again in the 4th to take a 6-0 lead.  Abbott gave way to rookie Charles Nagy in the 5th, but the results didn’t change as Seattle’s Hector Villanueva stretched the lead to 8-0 with a two-run home run.  Meanwhile, John Burkett pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings before wearing out, and Shawn Hillegas began 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief by stifling a bases-loaded, one out Orioles rally.

Game 3: SEA 6, BAA 3

O’s starter Pete Harnisch gave up only four hits in the first N innings, but they included two-run homers by Andres Thomas and Ken Griffey, Jr., and a solo shot by Sam Horn.  Seattle’s Jack McDowell went the distance, as Baltimore could only muster two RBI groundouts and a Joe Orsulak solo homer.

Game 4: BAA 6, SEA 4

Two straight wild pitches by Jeff Ballard gave Seattle a 1-0 lead after 1, but Baltimore tied it up in the 2nd on doubles by David Segui and Cory Snyder.   In the 3rd, Juan Samuel touched Seattle’s Trevor Wilson with a grand slam for a 5-1 lead, but homers by Henderson and Griffey cut it to 5-4 through 6 innings.  Baltimore squandered a two-on, no-out situation in the 7th as Seattle reliever Bryan Harvey [from the Chattanooga area] came in to strike out the side, but they did manage an insurance run in the 8th on a Mike Devereaux single.  Gregg Olson survived a shaky ninth inning to rack up save #12.
