Previous message                 Next message Message #: 26049 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Mar 26, 2012 Subject: Reds @ Mets A series that might be a playoff preview certainly *felt* like one, what with all the good pitching (except of course the Cincy bullpen aside from pitchers named Randy Myers) and all the close games.  There were three 1-run games, of which -- are you sitting down? -- the Reds won all 3 and moved from nearly last place in the N.L. in that category to middle of the pack!....     Game 1: Cincy's Tom Browning had a heck of a game going, carrying a shutout (but only a 1-0 lead) into the bottom of the 9th, whereupon he easily retired the first 2 batters before just as easily -- and far more in line with Cincy tradition -- allowing a split card gopher which tied the game.   Fortunately in the 10th the Reds discovered that Orlando Mercado can't throw (SB+error, times two) and eked out one run and a win as a result of that discovery.  Final score: 2-1.  Myers got the win with 1.1 scoreless IP, getting Mercado to hit into a DP to end the game.  NYN starter David Cone pitched nearly as well as Browning and Wally Whitehurst was charged with the unearned loss.   ===================================   Game 2: Bob Ojeda combined with Whitehurst on a 4-hit shutout by getting the Reds to LOB 9 but the big hero of the game was slugging first baseman Dave 'Kluzsewski' Magadan.  He went 4 for 4 with a pair of gophers and also settled for a double which could easily have been a third had he not missed (!) a 1-14 split.  Charlton & Layana were both bitten by Magadan's gophers, but held the non-Magadan portion of the New York offense to a 3 for 26 performance.  Or in other words, every bit as feeble as the Cincy offense (4 for 31) aside from that one Herculean effort.   ===================================   Game 3: Danny Jackson is supposed to allow only as many hits as IP, but his numbers in 1990 have been a 'Toronto-esque' disaster.  But today Jackson did his job adequately (6 IP, 5 hits, 4 walks, 3 runs) despite some defensive sabotage and Chris Sabo came up with some late clutch hits as the Reds came back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 on Sabo's RBI single in the 9th.    Light-hitting (.221) glove man Eric Davis gave the Mets a run that was charitably scored as 'earned' with a throwing error but made up for it with a pair of doubles and 2 runs scored.  Myers was the hero again in relief, with Jackson taking a no-decision but lowering his ERA to a not quite microscopic 6.38.   ===================================   Game 4: Determined to merely split the series, CIN starter Greg Harris weakened in the 8th and the unhittable Rob Dibble choked up a storm (8 batters faced, 4 hits) so Myers saved the day one more time.  Harris had a fine start (7.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 earned run) but the unearned run that Gary Ward permitted back in the 4th turned out to be critical after Dibble's epic meltdown.   Those patented Cincinnati chokes in both the 8th and 9th innings sent the game into overtime, but Davis homered off of Julio Machado in the 11th and sent the home crowd away both stunned and unhappy.  Final score: 5-4.   Alan
