Bill Sampen: 20 appearances, 3 starts, 35 innings, 52 hits, 18 walks with 13 home runs allowed. Results: 0 wins, 5 losses, 2 saves (how???) with a 7.79 ERA. Not pertinent to this series except he gave up yet another home run to open up what was a close game 3. Experts suggest he only pitch on fields with no outfield fences. From the minor leagues Mel Rojas claims he can do better…
Oh. I almost forgot. Hal Morris had 7 hits, 3 doubles, 2 homers and 8 RBI in the first two games before going 0 for 4 in game 3.
Game 1 Hal Morris lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds bested the woeful Montreal Expos 6 to 5 at Riverfront Stadium.
Cincinnati jumped on top of Montreal in the bottom of the 7th inning scoring a single run. Montreal tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Norm Charlton (4-3) went 2 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Randy Myers earned the save, his 8th. Joe Grahe (2-5) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 walks.
'We won because we did the little things right.' Alan Boodman said after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games we don't make mistakes.' Game 2 First baseman Hal Morris had 4 hits and 6 RBI at Riverfront Stadium where the Cincinnati Reds beat the awful Montreal Expos 9 to 4.
It seemed that Montreal pitching was serving up softballs for Morris to hit. He doubled bringing home two base runners in the 1st inning, clubbed a three-run home run in the 2nd inning, lined a single in the 4th inning and doubled which scored a run in the 8th inning. Cincinnati finished with 14 hits while Montreal ended up with 9.
The win was credited to Tim Belcher (5-4) who went 7 innings allowing 3 runs. Tommy Greene (0-11) absorbed the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.
'Morris led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Belcher said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.' Game 3 The Cincinnati Reds readily handled Montreal Expos by a score of 5 to 1 at Riverfront Stadium.
Greg Harris (5-2) pitched a fine game. He went 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered up 2 hits and 6 walks improving his ERA from 3.82 to 3.49. Cincinnati out-hit Montreal for the game, 10 hits to 4.
Dennis Martinez (5-6) was charged with the loss. With this win, Cincinnati has a division leading 39-27 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Steve Bivens was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 1-9 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
