Teams alternate wins and get the split. game 1: Ed "no luck" Whitson took the mound for the Padres in the opener and was immediately sliced like a cadaver on an autopsy table (both by his card and his defense). Whitson has 5 hits on his card and the Braves got 3 of them in the first inning, including a 3 run homer. Thanks to an error by his 1 at 2b all 4 runs the Braves scored were unearned. Another 5 column hit led to another run in the 3rd inning for the Braves. Held to one hit in the first 3 innings, the Padres strung 5 straight hits together to score 3 times to cut the lead in the 4th. Howard's pinch double in the 7th cut it to 5-4 but that would be the final score. Take out the 4th inning and Andy Hawkins was almost unhittable against former team. Whitson falls to 5-6 despite a 2.21 era. game 2: Neither team pitched that well (25 total hits) but managed to keep the other team off the board for the most part. Braves get on the board first as Jacoby homers off of Benes' card in the 3rd inning. Padres finally broke through in the 5th, using 4 hits to score 3 times. The big blow was a 2 run 2 out double by Glenn Wilson. Padres added one in the 8th when Reynolds singled, stole second and scored on a Templeton single. Steve "sambito" Farr came in and allowed a homer to the first batter he faced to make the final 4-2. Jacoby ended up 4-4 in this one game 3: Bruce hurst took his turn on the operating table. He allowed 5 xbh and all 5 were either 4-9 or 4-10 rolls. The damage could have been worse as the 4-9's ended up as doubles instead of home runs. Padres got a run in the 3rd but the Braves got a 2out 2run single by Blauser in the 4th to take the lead. Padres tied it in the 5th when Alomar tripled and scored on a sac fly. Braves went back on top in the 6th with an unearned run when Hurst walked in a run. The 7th is when it really fell apart as 3 batters in a 4 batter stretch got 4-9 or 4-10 rolls including another Jacoby homer. Braves won 6-2. game 4: Gwynn tripled with 2 outs in the first and scored on a Mulliniks single to give the Padres the early lead. They tacked on solo runs in the 5th and 6th to take a 3-0 lead. Eric Show was sharp until the 6th when Davis hit a 2 run homer and Guillen added a sac fly to tie the game. In the 7th Davis had a 2 run triple to put the Braves on top. Roberts rbi single in the 8th cut the lead to one. Padres were down to their last out in the 9th when Reynolds lofted one into the left field corner that Griffey Sr couldn't catch up with. It fell for a game tying triple. In the 10th, Glenn Wilson lifted one where no one could catch it and the Padres had the 6-5 comeback win. Gene Harris got the win to match Whitson on the season as they both have 5 wins and era's of 2.21. For the 2nd week in a row, Santiago, who is a 1, allowed a single on an x play. |
