Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 10 (and Week 11 CM)

Boston takes two of three in a not-so-artistic series with the Orioles.

Game 1: BOA 2, BAA 0

There were no RBI hits in this game, as Boston scored its two runs in the 5th on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI groundout.  It wasn’t the great pitching duel that the score would imply – the Orioles left 10 men on base, and the Red Sox would have done the same if it weren’t for 3 double plays and a botched hit-and-run.  Perhaps the key to the Bosox victory was that Mike Boddicker and Jeff Gray registered eight strikeouts for the Sox, vs. zero for the Orioles pitchers.  Or maybe it was just the results of five innings that ended with Orioles stranded in scoring position.

Game 2: BAA 6, BOA 5

It took only three batters to produce the first RBI hit in this game.  Baltimore scored three runs in the first on RBI doubles by Cal Ripken and David Segui and a Felix Fermin error.  In the second, the O’s touched Boston starter Tom Bolton for two more, but Segui errors in both the second and third led to three runs for Boston.  Bolton settled in to pitch five scoreless innings, surviving an Orioles rally in the 7th, and Ellis Burks’ solo homer in the 5th off the shaky Bob Milacki cut the lead to 5-4.  The Orioles bullpen held the lead, and an 8th inning single by Mike Devereaux got the O’s an insurance run.  That proved critical, as the bottom of the eighth brought the Red Sox fans to their feet.  With the bases loaded and two out, Baltimore closer Gregg Olson gave up an RBI single to Wade Boggs, but right fielder Cory Snyder threw out tying run Jody Reed at the plate.  An anticlimactic 1-2-3 ninth gave Milacki the win and Olson the save.

Game 3: BOA 14, BAA 7

This was one of the ugliest games in recent memory.  Red Sox starter Mark Knudson wasn’t fooling anyone in the early innings, but it could have been even worse.  Baltimore scored twice in the first, the hard way – on two consecutive RBI groundouts – and failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the second. But the O’s came through for 4 runs in the 3rd , highlighted by a Chris James double and yet another RBI groundout.  Staked to a 6-0 lead, Baltimore starter Jim Abbott and reliever Jose Bautista gave up 10 runs on 13 hits in the next two innings.  Knudson gave one back in the top of the fifth.  Not to be outdone, Baltimore’s Anthony Telford and Mark Williamson each gave up two more runs in the fifth and sixth, putting Boston up 14-7.  Improbably, Knudson pitched better once his pitch count approached double digits; he lasted 7 innings and 146 pitches to pick up a richly-undeserved victory.

Fun facts: Boston racked up 20 hits in Game 3; not only did every starter get a hit, all but two of them had two or more.  Bautista’s first appearance of the season left him with an ERA of 81.00.
