Subject: Chicago @ Montreal

The Cubs traveled north of the border and found a game Montreal Expos team to tangle through an almost-homerfree 4-game series.

G1 Montreal jumped all over Cubs' starter Greg Maddux, scoring 7 times (on 11 hits) over the first 6 innings.  Andres Galarraga's bases-clearing double in the 3rd was the biggest blow for the Expos.  However, Montreal pulled starter Dave LaPoint (7 3 0 0 1 4) in the top of the 8th.   The Expos bullpen completely fell apart as the Cubs built their rally.  With one out and the bases loaded, reliever John Mitchell hit Luis Salazar with a pitch and then walked Terry Puhl to force in the first 2 runs.  In came Frank Dipino who promptly allowed an RBI single to Terry Kennedy.  Shawon Dunston popped up for the 2nd out, but even though the score was 7-3, the Cubs weren't done.  Ryne Sandberg walked with the bases loaded and Montreal went to its 3rd reliever in the inning- Scott Ruskin.   Ruskin walked Jack Howell, allowed an RBI single for Derrick May, and issued another bases loaded walk to Jerome Walton which tied the game, 7-7, before retiring Mark Grace on a groundout to end the horrific 8th inning.

The game was salvagable for Montreal though.  In the bottom of the 9th, youngster Larry Walker led off with a double.  With Galarraga's grounder sending him to 3rd, Chicago summoned RH Darryl Akerfelds.  Akerfelds' wild pitch provided the opportunity for Walker to scamper home with the winning run to reward those Expos' fans who had been so distraught just an inning earlier.

Final Score: Montreal 8, Chicago 7
WP- Ruskin 2-3, LP- Palacios 1-2
HR- Baerga (3)

G2 was different from the opener like night and day.  Greg Swindell (9 6 1 1 0 4) took matters into his own hands and stymied the Expos for his 2nd complete game as he also posted his team-leading 9th win.  Chicago's leading hitter was surprisingly 2nd-year OF Gary Varsho.  Varsho doubled in each of his first 3 at bats, as well as scoring and driving in a run.  The Cubs had 6 doubles overall out of their 9 total hits.  Montreal's Tracy Jones' 3 hits were half of the Expos' total for the game.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Montreal 1
WP- Swindell 9-4, LP- Wetteland 1-2
HR- none

G3 once again reversed the result of the previous game by the same precise final score.  This time Joe Grahe (5 4 1 1 1 4) went just far enough to secure the victory and the Expos' pen was so much better this time around, allowing only 2 baserunners over the final 4 innings.  Spike Owen's 6th inning 2-run double expanded Montreal's lead from 2-1 to 4-1 so that the hometown fans could breathe a bit easier.  Galarraga had 2 hits in this game to lead Montreal and Puhl had 2 hits out of the leadoff spot for Chicago.

Final Score: Montreal 5, Chicago 1
WP- Grahe 3-4, LP- Harkey 3-3
HR- none

Game 4 was the first pitchers' duel of the series.  The unbelievably unlucky Tommy Greene (6 1/3 4 3 3 2 0) pitched a 1-0, 2-hit shutout heading into the fatal 7th inning. In the 7th, Jack Howell blasted a 1-out home run, and that was followed by a walk to Grace and a single by Kennedy.  Mitchell replaced Greene and promptly retired Varsho before allowing back-to-back RBI singles by Dunston and Riles.  After Chicago increased its lead to 4-1 in the top of the 8th inning, Montreal made a last ditch comeback effort in the bottom of the 8th.  Delino Deshields scored on a wild pitch and Mike Fitgerald's sac fly scored Jones.  But despite a 2-out single by Larry Walker, Paul Assemacher got the crucial 3rd out.
Jones and Fitzgerald led both teams with 2-hit games.  Shawn Boskie (5 3 1 1 0 4) left the game after 6 innings trailing 1-0 on Jones' 1st HR of the season.

Final Score: Chicago 4, Montreal 3
WP- Palacios 2-2, LP- Greene 0-11, SV- Power (15)
HR- Jones (1), Howell (4)
