Ouch! New manager attached.
Game 1 Darryl Strawberry had 2 base hits at Shea Stadium as the New York NL Mets beat the hapless Montreal Expos 6 to 2.
New York NL jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 3 runs on 3 hits. That early run support was all that Mike Scott (8-1) required. New York NL finished with 8 hits while Montreal ended up with 5.
Joe Grahe (3-6) was charged with the loss. He allowed New York NL 6 runs in 5 innings of work. Game 2 Frank Viola allowed Jon Fellows to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and right fielder Darryl Strawberry slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the New York NL Mets really laid it on the hapless Montreal Expos 16 to 3.
Strawberry helped send the fans home happy. He laced a base-hit in the 2nd inning, delivered a single in the 4th inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 5th inning. New York NL lit up the scoreboard in the 4th inning which saw them score 5 runs on 5 hits and the 5th inning with 5 runs on 5 hits. New York NL finished with 18 hits in the victory.
Viola (13-1), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Tommy Greene (0-13). He was unable to control the New York NL offense and allowed 10 hits and 6 walks in 4 innings. Game 3 Tim Teufel knocked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the New York NL Mets outscored the Montreal Expos 9 to 3.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Teufel. He laced a base-knock in the 3rd inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 5th inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 7th inning. New York NL had a total of 9 hits for the game.
Jay Tibbs (1-1) got the win allowing 2 runs in 5 innings. Mark Thurmond preserved the game for Tibbs, recording his 2nd. Dennis Martinez (5-7) was given the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 walks. Game 4 Dwight Gooden mowed down 13 Montreal batters as the New York NL Mets bested the Montreal Expos 2 to 1 at Shea Stadium.
Gooden (8-1) was very good in the win. He surrendered only 8 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. New York NL rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon.
Dave Lapoint (0-5) suffered the loss. The New York NL fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by Gooden, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Jon Fellows said following the game.
