Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox

The unluckiest team in the universe has one of the most disastrous series ever.  If only home games counted the Jays would be in first place as expected, but on the road the beat just goes on and on and on....

Game 1: Early in this series, the offense at least tried to show up.  Todd (7.22) Stottlemyre was given an early 3-0 lead and therefore blew it, then the bullpen finished the job.  After Duane Ward's 2-run gopher broke the tie, Tom Henke came in and did a 'Perfect Sambito' which finished off Choke #1.  Ward + Henke = 1.1 IP, 3 runs.  Final score: 7-5 with TOA pitchers being gophered four times.

Game 2: Dave Stieb had a great start for a long time, allowing just a couple of cheap BP singles, but he had only a 1-0 lead going into the 9th.  You don't have to think very hard to guess what happened.  That's right -- the first batter of the 9th gophered and Choke #2 was completed in the bottom of the 11th on a leadoff triple followed immediately by the game-losing single.  Final score: 2-1.  CHA had only 6 hits for the day, but starter Mark Portugal breezed through the luckless Toronto lineup and worked all the way into the 11th inning.

Game 3: Choke #3 was sealed the moment that the lineup card was handed to the umpire.  Pat (7.57) Combs took the mound and registered another complete game; in a Combs' start things get out of hand so quickly that the Arson Squad isn't required and can take the day off to refuel.  After a typically rotten beginning, Combs actually kept it close and didn't donate the final 2 runs until seconds after the Jays had made a contest out of it.  Final score: 5-2.

Game 4: Jimmy (5.45) Key had a surprisingly decent (though naturally hittable) start, allowing just 1 run in 6.2 innings and leaving it to Arson Master Henke to pull of Choke #4 which, of course, he did.  Kelly Gruber's homer gave the Jays a 2-1 lead in the 5th but in the 8th & 9th Henke allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in the space of 8 batters faced, and that was good for 2 runs and the ballgame.  Final score: 3-2.  The teams combined to hit into 8 double plays, 4 apiece, but the Jays had far fewer runners which caused those DPs to be far more costly.
