Previous message                 Next message Message #: 26117 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Apr 8, 2012 Subject: Reds @ Cardinals Against Cincy's very generous pitchers the Cardinals were able to amass tons of baserunners, many of the low-probability surgical variety, but fortunately had considerable trouble scoring them aside from one inning in game 2....     Game 1: Wes Gardner's first CIN start was an eventful one (6.2 IP, 6 hits [all singles], 6 walks, 2 errors and a PB) but the only run he permitted was via that passed ball, an unearned tally in the 7th.  Gardner also got a hit and drove in a run to help himself to a 4-1 victory.  St. Louis stranded 11 runners and lost 3 more on GIDPs.   =========================================   Game 2: Starters Danny Jackson & Jose Dejesus both pitched exactly 6 innings, but otherwise their days could not have been more different.  Dejesus allowed just 3 hits and zero runs while Jackson's weekly nightmare resulted in 7 hits allowed, 5 free passes and 6 runs.  Meanwhile the Cincy offense was hitting into 3 critical DPs to 0 for SLN.   But shortly after Jackson died once again during surgery, a funny thing happened: the Cardinal bullpen did the same.  Dave Righetti and Doug Jones were nicked for 6 runs in the 7th and the game remained tied heading into extras.   Barry Larkin was hit by a pitch to open the 10th, stole second and raced to third on a throwing error, then scored on a sac fly.  Final score: 7-6.  The teams combined for 19 hits: 18 singles and 1 double.   =========================================   Game 3: The first 6 Reds in the top of the first reached base and Jim Clancy only narrowly retired the next two before Cincy starter Greg Harris plated the 5th run with a single before taking the mound to throw his first pitch of the day.    The Cincy offense pretty much called off the attack at that point, Harris and reliever Norm Charlton proceeded to follow the script by allowing baserunners galore, but the Cardinals didn't score even once until Charlton allowed a 2-out, bottom-of-the-9th gopher good for 3 runs.  But for once that didn't matter.  Final score: 7-3, as SLN LOBbed 11 after getting 10 hits and 5 walks.   Not exactly a convincing performance by the Reds in these 3 games, but we got runs when necessary and somehow kept opposition scoring down despite lots of hits and lots of walks.   Alan
