The Cubs traveled north of the border, but the beat goes on as the young bears continue to play .500 ball away from Wrigley. G1 ended up appearing like 2 games in 1. During the first 5 innings, Cubs' starter Greg Swindell (5 4 2 2 0 3) was in charge, and when Russ Morman came through with a PH 2-run single for Swindell in the 6th, Chicago led 5-1. From that point on, it was all Expos. In the bottom of the 6th, Delino Deshields tripled home 1 run before scoring on a Shawon Dunston error. The score was 5-4, Cubs, heading to the 9th (after Chicago left the bases full of walks in the 8th). Paul Assenmacher was summoned for Chicago, and Andres Galarraga singled. After Kevin Bass sacrificed, Ron Karkovice beat out an infield roller to make it 1st and 3rd, 1 out.
Mike Fitzgerald PH and delivered an RBI sacrifice bunt to score the "Big Cat." And, after Marquis Grissom walked, DeShields singled home PR Oddibe McDowell with the winning run. From the "What are ya gonna do" dept, here are Montreal's rolls for the 9th inning. (1-2 1B, sacrifice, 2-11 1B, sacrifice RBI, 3-5 BB, and 2-8 RBI 1B) DeShields led the Expos with a 3-for-5 night while Mark Grace and Jack Howell each collected 3 hits for the Cubs. Final Score: Montreal 6, Chicago 5 WP- Mitchell 3-4, LP- Assenmacher 2-2 HR- Howell (7), T.Jones (2) G2 featured another case of me leaving the starting pitcher in a bit too long. Shawn Boskie had pitched well through 7 innings so that the two teams were tied at 3-3. In the 8th inning, Montreal put together the game-winning rally on the basis of errors by Ryne Sandberg and Alex Cole, and
RBI from McDowell and Jim Presley. Bill Sampen allowed one baserunner in 2 innings to earn the win for Montreal. Alex Cole led both teams with 3 hits, and he also stole 3 bases. Final Score: Montreal 6, Chicago 3 WP- Sampen 1-5, LP- Boskie 2-1 HR- Galarraga (12) G3 Chicago started to feel snakebit in the 3rd game. The Cubs used a 7-run 2nd inning to build a 9-6 lead after 6 innings. But, like you can set your watches by it, the Expos had a comeback in them. Presley again came through with a 2-run single and Shawon Dunston's error allowed McDowell to score the tying run. Montreal only had 1 out at that point with a man on 3rd, but the Expos could not push across the go-ahead run as Nelson Santovenia struck out and Jamie Moyer flied out. The score would stay, 9-9, and the game headed to extra innings. Montreal had a
chance to score in the 10th after loading the bases with 1 out, but the Big Cat K'd and Bass flied out. The 11th was uneventful, and then the Cubs broke through in the 11th. Ryne Sandberg reached on a FC and stole 2nd with 1 out. Russ Morman singled home Sandberg, and one batter later, Assenmacher doubled home Morman. The Cubs' lefty was able to finish off his own win by retiring the Expos in the 12th. Final Score: Chicago 11, Montreal 9, 12 innings WP- Assenmacher 3-2, LP- Mitchell 3-5 HR- none G4 When it comes down to it, this was a very entertaining game for the Montreal fans. In the finale, Montreal took the early lead for once when DeShields (who walked) and Tracy Jones (who doubled) both scored on groundouts. Sandberg's 5th inning 2-run homer evened the score, 2-2. Carmelo Martinez led off the 6th with a HR to put the Cubs in front. In
the 9th, the Expos threatened closer Ted Power with singles by Presley and Fitzgerald with 2 outs. But, Chicago's closer got Santovenia to fly out to Martinez to earn the Cubs a hard-fought split in the series. Final Score: Chicago 3, Montreal 2 WP- Harkey 5-4, LP- D.Martinez 5-10, SV- Power (20) HR- Sandberg (24), C.Martinez (9) |
