Game 1 Ramon Martinez pitched 7 strong innings at Dodger Stadium where the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 7 to 0.
The game started off with Los Angeles taking the lead in the first with 3 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Jeff Huson began the Los Angeles spurt when he doubled. Eddie Murray followed next and he reached on an error. Kal Daniels then was hit by a pitch. Tony Pena was up next and he laced a base-knock. Kirk Gibson stepped into the box and drew a walk. Dale Murphy continued the rally and hit a sacrifice fly. Martinez got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. That early scoring was all that Martinez (8-4) needed. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
The loss was charged to Tommy Greene (2-14). Los Angeles scored big getting 7 runs off him in 5 innings. Game 2 Dennis Martinez, Bill Sampen and Scott Ruskin combine to shutout the Dodgers for 11 innings in a 1-0 victory at Dodger Stadium.
The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. Montreal was victorious in the 11th inning. Mike Felder tripled. Delino Deshields was next and he hit a deep fly scoring Felder. Randy Ready struck out, unable to help the rally. Montreal and Los Angeles each finished the night with 7 hits.
Scott Ruskin got the save, his 8th. Jesse Orosco (1-3) took the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and no walks in 1 and 2/3 innings. Game 3 Andres Galarraga had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 5 to 3 at Dodger Stadium.
Dave Lapoint (1-7) had a fairly solid outing. He was reached for 6 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings. Montreal ended up with 11 hits for the game while Los Angeles had 8.
Xavier Hernandez recorded the save, his 1st. The loss was charged to Mike Morgan (5-10). He got hammered, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Game 4 Kevin Bass hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 9 to 8.
Despite a shaky outing, John Wetteland (3-3) got the win. He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings. Los Angeles had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Wetteland got relief help from Scott Ruskin who gained credit for his 9th save. Jim Deshaies (4-9) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the Montreal offense and allowed 12 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
'He gutted it out' Steve Bivens said of Wetteland. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'
