Subject: Chicago @ Cincinnati

After failing to score in the first game, the Cubs account for one of their more successful road series of the season.

G1 Jose Rijo (9 5 0 0 1 7) was the story in the series' opener (going 2-for-3 with an RBI as a batter as well).   The seventh inning was the one opportunity for Chicago to break through and the Cubs' manager ran them out of the inning.  Mark Grace singled to lead off, but he was caught stealing.  Even though Jerome Walton followed with a double, the next two batters stranded him in scoring position.  Meanwhile, Cincinnati put the game away by scoring in 4 different innings.  Hal Morris and Jamie Quirk each had 3 of the Reds' 16 hits.

Final Score: Cincinnati 8, Chicago 0
WP- Rijo 7-5, LP- Boskie 2-2
HR- Larkin (5)

G2 Facing the lefty Tom Browning, Chicago was finally able to generate some scoring in the middle of this game.  In the 4th, Joe Girardi doubled home Russ Morman after Morman had tripled in a run.  In the 6th, the Cubs made it 5-3 when Ryne Sandberg clouted a solo homer and Mike Bielecki added an RBI single.  Despite his clutch hit, Bielecki (5 5 3 3 1 4) was removed after 5 innings.  Chicago's bullpen was good enough- allowing runs in the 7th and 9th after the Cubs scored an insurance run in the top of the 9th.   Chicago outhit Cincinnati, 14-7, but several baserunners were erased and the LOB finished at Cubs 10, Reds 8.  No Red had more than one hit while both Girardi and Shawon Dunston each had 3 hits for the Cubs.

Final Score: Chicago 6, Cincinnati 5
WP- Bielecki 9-4, LP- Browning 9-7, SV- Power (22)
HR- Sandberg (30), Riles (7)

G3 The following game the Cubs used a similar pathway to success.  This time the Cubs got all of thier runs early in the contest: scoring 3 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd with 3 of the 4 runs coming on homers by Luis Salazar and Andre Dawson.   The Reds inched their way back into the game when Jamie Quirk scored on a balk in the 5th and on Paul O'Neill's solo HR and Von Hayes' PH RBI single in the 7th to make the score, 4-3, Chicago.    Cincinnati got runners in scoring position in each of the last two innings, but the Cubs' bullpen pitched out of trouble in each case.  This was a game in which the Reds outhit Chicago, 10-8, but once again LOB were very tight, Chicago 9,  Cincinnati 8.  Girardi had his 2nd straight multi-hit game for the Cubs while Hal Morris managed to go 3-for-4 without scoring or driving in a run for the Reds.

Final Score: Chicago 4, Cincinnati 3
WP- Harkey 7-4, LP- Belcher 6-6, SV-Power (23)
HR- L.Salazar (7), Dawson (19), O'Neill (15)

G4 Chicago made it 3 consecutive one-run wins in the finale.  Greg Maddux (5 6 2 1 1 5) was hittable, but the Cubs' bullpen again was up to the challenge by allowing only 3 baserunners and 1 run over the final 4 innings.  It looked like the Reds might make a dramatic 9th inning comeback when Jamie Quirk led off with a home run and 2 outs later, Barry Larkin reached on a rare error by Sandberg.  But, this time, Paul Assenmacher was summoned to bail out Ted Power and retired PH Mariano Duncan on a fly ball to end the game.  Sandberg continued his extraordinary season when he went 3-for-4 with a homer in this contest.  O'Neill homered for the 2nd straight game for the Reds.

Final Score: Chicago 4, Cincinnati 3
WP- Maddux 11-8, LP- Harris 8-4, SV- Assenmacher (8)
HR- Sandberg (31), O'Neill (16), Grace (5), Quirk (2)
