Matt Williams hits 5 home runs in the series, 3 of them in game 4. Jose Mesa throws a one-hitter in game 4. Somehow, the Expos manage to win game 3.
Game 1 Jeff Brantley performed beautifully in relief as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 6 to 5 at Candlestick Park .
The deciding run was scored by San Francisco in the 8th. Matt Williams lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'. After an out was recorded, Darren Daulton came up and he drew a walk. Robby Thompson then banged out a single. Brantley was great in relief and recorded his 24th save.
Kelly Downs(1-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Jamie Moyer(2-1) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning. Game 2 Third baseman Matt Williams homered and Erik Hanson dominated striking out 12 Montreal batters at Candlestick Park as the San Francisco Giants beat the hopeless Montreal Expos by the count of 4 to 0.
Hanson(10-4) was tremendous on the mound for San Francisco . He gave up just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. San Francisco totaled 7 hits on the night.
Tommy Greene(2-15) was the losing pitcher. 'Hanson pitched a gem of a game', Steve Bivens recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.' Game 3 Dennis Martinez went 9 strong innings as the Montreal Expos bested the San Francisco Giants 4 to 1 at Candlestick Park .
Martinez(6-11) was on top of his game. He allowed just 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Montreal totaled 8 hits on the night.
Scott Garrelts(6-8) ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered just 6 hits and no walks. ' Martinez just dominated us' losing pitcher Garrelts said. 'Hopefully we can get to him the next time around' Game 4 Matt Williams knocked 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI and Jose Mesa threw a 1 hit shutout as the San Francisco Giants destroyed the Montreal Expos by a score of 13 to 0 at Candlestick Park .
Williams was spectacular at the plate. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st inning, clubbed a two-run home run in the 2nd inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 4th inning, slapped a one-base hit in the 5th inning and smacked a single in the 7th inning. San Francisco rapped out 18 hits for the afternoon.
Mesa(1-2) went the distance for the shutout. Dave Lapoint(1-9) absorbed the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 5 innings.
