Expos win two games in a fashion that Alan will truly appreciate: Game 2 John Wetteland throws a complete game shutout and drives in the only run in a 1-0 victory. Game 4 The Reds are down 6 to 4 when they start a two out bottom of the ninth inning rally off of Scott Ruskin. Larkin and Kruk single. Paul O’Neill follows with a double but Kruk is thrown out at home by right fielder Larry Walker’s frozen rope.
Game 1 The Cincinnati Reds nipped the Montreal Expos 5 to 4 at Riverfront Stadium in a hard fought contest.
Cincinnati scored all of the necessary runs in the 3rd inning when they came up with 5 runs on 5 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Cincinnati finished with 8 hits in the victory.
Jose Rijo (8-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and allowing 4 runs. Norm Charlton got the save, his 4th. Dave Lapoint (1-10) was the losing pitcher.
Cincinnati now has a record of 62-45. Montreal continued their losing ways and their record is now 32-75, worst in the division. They are 2-8 in their last ten games. Game 2 John Wetteland carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Montreal Expos outscored the Cincinnati Reds 1 to 0.
Wetteland (4-3) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Cincinnati offense. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.86 to 3.39. The right-handed Wetteland lost a no-hitter when Barry Larkin doubled with one out in the 6th inning. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Tom Browning (9-8) was tagged with the loss. Alan Boodman was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals. We've been through this many times - it's the nature of the game. We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!' Game 3 Paul O'Neill hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the awful Montreal Expos 13 to 4 at Riverfront Stadium.
O'Neill had a big evening at the plate. He singled in the 4th inning, lofted a three-run bomb in the 5th inning and lined a base-hit which brought home a run in the 8th inning. Overall Cincinnati out-hit Montreal 14 to 8.
Greg Harris (9-4) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Joe Grahe (3-10) ended up with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Game 4 35,100 fans were treated to a fine game at Riverfront Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Cincinnati Reds by a 6 to 5 score. The Reds rally in the 9th inning was snuffed out when John Kruk was thrown out at home on Paul O’Neill’s two-out double.
Montreal took the lead for good in the top of the 5th inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits.
The win was credited to Tommy Greene (3-16) who went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Scott Ruskin recorded his 10th save. The loss was charged to Mike Witt (5-5). He gave up 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings of work.
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Alan Boodman after the game. 'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.'
