Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers & White Sox

The Jays could easily have won all 4 games; given our propensity for choking, we could easily have lost all 4 (and we sure tried to).  So a split seems fair, especially since I have never seen a series where so many times we rolled a 99% loaded column -- and then found the one surgical out....

TEA Game 1: Tom Candiotti had his first competent start as a member of the Jays, but it went for naught because a nonentity named Scott Chiamparino had the best start he will EVER have.  The Texas rookie tossed a complete-game 4-hitter and the Jays lost by the score of 2-1.  Neither team drew a walk in this game.  2-out clutch hits produced both Texas scores, the losing run aided by a critical wild pitch.

Game 2: Pat Combs was given an early 4-1 lead so of course the Jays had to come back to tie the score at 5, which we accomplished when John Olerud got our first clutch hit of the series in the 8th.  From the 10th thru the 18th Texas got only 1 runner as far as second base, but the contest dragged on as the Jays played Strand-O-Matic.  Finally Toronto amassed 5 hits in the 19th (then LOBbed the bases loaded) and escaped with an 8-5 win.  Parrish had 7 hits, Mitch Webster 5, and the 5-6-7-8-9 slots in the TOA lineup went a combined 4 for 40 including 0 for 17 from 8-9 hitters Hill, Briley & Hulett.

The *highly* unlikely hero of this game and the entire road week was, of all people.... Tom Henke.  Henke tossed 6 scoreless innings today and 10 scoreless IP among these 4 contests.  In this marathon, Agosto, Ward and winner Dave Stieb (15-2) also combined for 8.1 scoreless IP after Combs' typically disgraceful performance.

=======================================

CHA Game 1: Five Chicago pitchers dodged about 100 loaded-column bullets, while the Jays used only one pitcher.  Jimmy Key took the complete-game loss but pitched well, allowing just 8 baserunners in 8 IP.  Parrish wasn't the only record-setter for the Jays this week: Fred McGriff had a moderately good (1-19) chance at a home run -- and missed.  That ties a record which can never be broken, and is unique so far in 1990: in nearly 95,000 plate appearances this year, NO OTHER BATTER has missed a 1-19 home run.  And what was the final score today?  Big surprise -- the Jays lost by exactly one run, 3-2.

Game 2: In his ultimate road start for the Jays, Bud Black demonstrated that he is apparently happy to be leaving.  Given a 5-1 lead, 2 outs and nobody on base in the 5th, Black reported for surgery one last time and it was a doozy.  Dale Murphy's grand slam 4 batters later tied the game and Black was wheeled from the operating room to the morgue.

The Jays responded with lots of power and walks, but the bullpen (David Wells) and defense (2 unearned runs) refused to cease their sabotage until Henke restored order again.  When Henke began to unravel with 2 outs in the 9th -- old habits die hard -- Duane Ward got the last out with the tying run at the plate.  Final score: 11-8.  McGriff homered and scored 4 times in his finale, as the Roberto Alomar Era begins next week.
