Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
Reds should have won 4, could have won zero had the breaks been slightly more awful, and settle for a split against the 9th place team in the league; not exactly the best way to get back into a pennant race.... Game 1: Example #14978 of "NOBODY chokes like the Reds", not that anyone would want to: Jose Rijo went nearly 6 innings before allowing a real hit (cheap bunt single, two blown x's) and had a 4-0 lead when Kal Daniels launched a solo gopher with 2 outs in the 6th. The score remained 4-1 into the bottom of the 9th (cue ominous music) when Rijo was bitten again leading off the inning. 4-2. Enter unhittable reliever Rob 'Sambito' Dibble. Double, walk, balk, double. Batters retired: zero. Score: 4-4. This sort of thing is becoming quite routine for Dibble. Enter equally unhittable reliever Randy Myers and 5 pitches later L.A.s third gopher of the game resulted in a 6-4 loss, with 5 runs coming in the final inning. =============================== Game 2: A game that in no way should have been close (LOB: CIN - 11, LA - 4) became extremely tight when the gophers came out to play once more, a 3-run shot by Daniels which reduced our 5-1 lead to 5-4 in the 7th. But Ricky Jordan matched Daniels with 3 runs of his own in the 9th and Dibble actually retired a few batters today. Final score: 8-4, but it was in doubt until the final pitch. =============================== Game 3: The first inning of today's tilt illustrated the series nicely. Cincy for the umpteenth time in the series got multiple RISP with zero outs and for the umpteenth time failed to score, this time via Chris Sabo's timely bases-loaded GIDP. Seconds later, Sabo's critical blown-x play with 2 outs handed L.A. 2 runs. That was all the Dodgers got, and all they'd need. Final score: 2-1. Ramon Martinez & Jesse Orosco combined on a 3-hitter, while Cincy's Scott Scudder allowed just as few earned runs as the Dodger tandem (1) and deserved a far better outcome. =============================== Game 4: Despite another error, which wasn't costly thanks to Myers' solid pitching, Sabo provided the *winning* margin today with a solo homer and the Reds escaped with a 2-1 win. Greg Harris started and with Myers scattered 5 hits, 0 walks and 12 Ks. Sabo's homer gave the Reds an early 1-0 lead which was forfeit when L.A. quickly tied it up in the 3rd on a double, bunt & sac fly. Finally in the 8th the Reds had something unlikely go in our favor when Ruben Sierra coughed up an x-play triple to Barry Larkin and compounded that gaffe with an error as Larkin circled the bases. Another CIN error gave the Dodgers some life in the bottom of the 9th (uh oh) but Myers got L.A. to roll on his card and for once HAL found the numerous outs instead of the scarce walks & hits. Alan |
