Game 1 In a lop-sided win the Pittsburgh Pirates ripped the woeful Montreal Expos by a 15 to 8 count.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Bobby Bonilla. He doubled with all three runners coming home in the 1st inning, tripled in the 2nd inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh kept the scorekeepers busy in the 1st inning which saw them score 7 runs on 5 hits. Offensively, Pittsburgh was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Rick Reed (3-1) got the win allowing 5 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Joe Grahe (4-11) was tagged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
'Actually, I didn't feel that comfortable at the plate tonight' Bonilla said after the game. 'Despite that, I'm happy with the results! Game 2 They almost ran out of baseballs at Three Rivers Stadium as Pittsburgh Pirates clobbered the pitiful Montreal Expos pitching staff, scoring 11 runs while Zane Smith (9-9), with relief help from Jim Gott, held Montreal to 1 run.
Pittsburgh took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning as they scored 4 runs on 5 base hits. That early run support was enough for Smith and Pittsburgh . For the game Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal 12 to 8.
Jeff Shaw (0-2) was given the loss. Pittsburgh scored big getting 6 runs off him in 4 innings. Game 3 In a thrilling finish the Pittsburgh Pirates won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Montreal Expos by the count of 3 to 2.
Pittsburgh scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. R.J. Reynolds got things going when he doubled. Barry Bonds came next and he popped a two-run clout over the fence making Pittsburgh victorious to the delight of the home town crowd. Pittsburgh had 10 hits for the night while Montreal had 6.
The winning pitcher was Clay Parker (3-2) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Scott Ruskin (4-5) ended up with the loss in relief. Mike Mashanic was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!' Game 4
Bobby Bonilla had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the ice-cold Montreal Expos in 14 innings 9 to 8.
The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh ended up winning it in the 14th inning. After an out was recorded, Barry Bonds was the sparkplug when he laced a base-hit. Don Slaught stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Gary Redus then drew a walk to load the bases. Bonilla stepped in and he drew a walk. One out later, Jose Lind came to bat and drew a walk. Pittsburgh finished with 13 hits in the victory.
Zane Smith (10-9) went 1 inning allowing 1 run for the victory. Mel Rojas (2-1) was given the loss in relief. He couldn't find the strike zone and allowed 5 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
This win by Pittsburgh continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 59-59. Steve Bivens was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
