Padres deal the Cubs faint playoff hopes another blow by taking 3 of 4.

game 1: Lets just say it was an ugly start and ugly finish to this one.  Shawn Boskie did his best litlle league pitcher imitation as he gave up 8 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in just 1 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Andy Benes departed after 6 innings of 1 run ball and handed a 9-1 lead off to Don Carman. Carman managed to get one of the, if not the worst ever, save in history.  Carman gave up 8 hits and 7 runs in 3 innings. 4 of the 8 hits were extra bases, including Joe Girardi's first career triple. WHen not rolling his 5 column, he was busy finding the hits off the batters cards.  Padres managed to win 11-8. Roberts was 4-4 to lead the 16 hit attack, and Carman managed to get an rbi on a fielder's choice.

game 2: Steve Farr's last appearance as a Padre was memorable, as in a nightmare. Cubs outhit the Padres 14-11 but won 11-2 as they got timely hits of their own, plenty of x play hits and bp hits, as well as a couple of timely Padre errors. Padres actually scored a run in the first but the Cubs answered with 6 in the 2nd, the last 3 unearned. They could have had more but left the bases loaded in the inning. Glenn Wilson hit an 8th inning homer for the Padres other run. Craig Lefferts was brought in to try to work out the kinks in his game and being in a non-save situation didn't help him any.  A walk, 3 singles (and a throwing error) gave the Cubs 3 8th inning runs.  Little did they know that would be the last they would score in the series.

game 3: Again the Padres plate a run in the first. 2 errors to start the inning helped the Padres add 2 in the 5th. Tony Gwynn's 2 run homer in the 9th capped the 6-0 win. Bruce Hurst tossed a complete game gem, allowing just 4 hits while striking out 9 to lower his era to 2.49.

game 4: Whitson and Maddux squared off in a pitchers duel.  Last minute starter Shawn Abner made the move pay off when he hit a 2 run homer off Maddux in the 2nd. That was more than enough as Whitson allowed just 5 hits in his complete game shutout. Templeton added an 8th inning rbi to make the final 3-0.
