Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals & Twins
Take it to the bank: the Blue Jays absolutely will choke away this pennant. The only question is how long it will take. With the exception of our new staff ace (just recalled from AAA) Toronto failed in every possible way: lousy starting pitching, inept bullpen work when the outcome was in doubt, zero clutch hits, fantastic split cards -- all in favor of our opponent -- timely wild pitches, balks, errors and other blown-x plays. Our lead ought to be totally gone within a few hours.... KCA Game 1: Fresh off the bus from the minors, Todd Stottlemyre took a no-hitter (sort of) into the 8th inning and escaped with a 3-0 win in Toronto's lone bright spot of the entire week. K.C. actually had 2 hits prior to the 8th, both of which were blown-x doubles by Junior "not a 4" Felix in center field. After flub #2 Felix was removed for Devon "1" White in the middle of an inning. White would later choke up a costly unearned run himself, but not today. Preparing for his eventual 1991 assignment, shortstop Manny Lee had 2 RBI while giving Tony Fernandez his first moments of rest this season. Game 2: Bret Saberhagen has had a rotten year, so of course he tossed 6 shutout innings at the Jays today. Tom Candiotti continues to suck at all times, giving us a preview of today's horror show by gophering one up to the first batter of the game. Fernandez returned to the lineup and took less than one inning to provide a costly 2-base blown x play, when 1 base just wouldn't have been enough. And downhill it went from there. Final score: 7-1. ========================================== MNA Game 1: Question: how to solve Toronto's worsening rotation problem? Answer: Not with Jason Grimsley. Grimsley was bombarded today when he wasn't busy walking everyone in sight. But even after all that the Jays allowed exactly as many earned runs as the Twins. Kelly Gruber and Devon White both came up with very costly errors at just the right times. Jays lose, 6-4. Gruber doubled and homered to somewhat atone for his defensive weakness; White on the other hand left his bat in California, as did Robby Alomar (see below). Game 2: Gopher machine Allan Anderson has had a rotten year, so of course he tossed 7 shutout innings at the Jays today. Pat Combs was OK for a while but then unfortunately remembered that he is, in fact, Pat Combs. Final score: 4-1. The Jays LOBbed 9 and the best thing that happened was Stottlemyre coming up with 2.2 innings of scoreless, albeit futile, relief. If he retires the next batter he faces, Stottlemyre could get his ERA below 6.0 for the first time in nearly 4 months! So how did the new guys do? White & Alomar did their best "Candiotti" impressions, combining to go 3 for 23. John Olerud, replacing McGriff in the lineup, responded to the challenge like a real trouper: 2 for 17. Alan |
