Subject: Reds @ Giants
The Reds once again fail to make up any ground despite plentiful opportunities to do so. Getting just one clutch hit during the entire series, Cincy barely managed to eke out a split (that could easily have been a sweep) only by virtue of some timely assistance from the San Francisco defense.... Game 1: The Reds dominated all day long, racking up hits and baserunners galore that amounted to nothing but LOB. Scott Scudder and Rob Dibble limited the Giants to 5 hits, but it was a nailbiter to the end. Reds win, 2-1. The teams combined for 16 hits, 15 of which were singles and the only one that wasn't proved to be big: a blown-x triple by Kevin Mitchell which tied the contest in the 5th. The Reds plated the winning run in the 8th when we loaded the bases with 1 out -- and actually scored! Ricky Jordan's sac fly gave the Reds a well-deserved lead and Dibble saved it with 3 innings of choke-free relief. Game 2: Cincy's Wes Gardner almost had a start to remember: 6.1 IP, 4 hits, no walks, TEN strikeouts. He did everything right except win as today became yet another lesson in 'How To Lose A Pennant'. Three of the 4 baserunners Gardner allowed were bunched nicely during the first 4 batters of the first inning, good for 2 runs. The last baserunner Gardner permitted was the final batter he faced, a gopher off the bat of Will Clark in the 7th that proved to be the losing run. Reds come up short in another close one, 3-2, stranding 9 to SFN's 3. Cincy loaded the bases with 0 outs in the 8th moments after Clark's heroics, and scored our typical amount (zero) in that situation. Game 3: The Reds turned to underachiever Mike Witt to try to stop the bleeding, a decision which didn't succeed although Witt had one of his best starts of the season. A clutch hit by slugger Jose Uribe with 2 outs in the second plated a pair for the home team, and San Fran got nothing more. Good thing for them they didn't need any more. Reds come up short in another close one, 2-1. Witt had a solid start but the offense couldn't purchase a break at any price. Game 4: Tom Browning yielded a single run thanks mainly to a timely wild pitch that made a sac fly possible, but otherwise he was excellent and held the Giants to 5 hits. And, in customary Cincy fashion, Browning would have lost the game 1-0 except for a defensive meltdown by the Giants in the 7th. Back-to-back errors tied the score and Chris Sabo, our one and only clutch hitter, came through with a triple which vanquished Terry Mulholland. Rick Reuschel fared no better and when the smoke cleared the Reds had scored 5 times and Browning ended up going the distance in the 6-1 final. Alan |
