Padres drop the first 3 as they had no breaks whatsoever. In what may be a first, SD was perfect on sending runners to the plate 3 runners sent to the plate, 3 runners gunned..... 3 runners gunned with a split of 20, including a 1-19 with a 4 behind the plate. HAL somehow let a bunch of runners score without throws. game 1: Cards put up 3 in the first and didn't look back. Padres actually outhit the Cards 11-10 but 5 of the cards hits (and it seemed like more) were doubles, usually with men on base. Down 6-2 in the 9th the Padres had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out but couldn't score as McGriff got a flyball C. Guerrero had 2 doubles and 3 rbi to lead St Louis. game 2: This one was tight throughout. The score was just 3-2 after the 7th inning stretch but ended up 8-7 as neither team could seem to get an out in the late innings. Padres had bases loaded in the top of the 7th and didn't score as they hit into a 6-2-3 dp. Of course the first St Louis batter had to homer in the bottom fo the inning. 4 more singles produced 2 more runs and the Cards led 6-2. Sheffield's 2 run double in the top of the 8th capped a 4 run rally that tied the score. After a wild pitch Sheffield was on 3rd with one out but couldn't score .Inning ended with Martinez getting a 2 on a hr 1 chance. bottom of the 8th, 2 out and a man on 2nd, Obrien gets a bp homer 1-3 chance and draws the 2 to put the cards up 2. In 9th, pinch hitter extrordinaire Rance Mulliniks greets Lee Smith with a homer to cut the lead to one. Next batter doubles and a walk follows. Templeton then bunted the runners up for Gwynn and McGriff. Having just 19 strikeouts all season you just knew that was going to be the result. McGriff then got a 4 on a 1b 1-3 chance to end the game. game 3: Craig Wilson and Felix Jose had 3 hits apiece (the rest of the team had 4) and St Louis won easily 5-1. game 4: Padres finally show some like in this one. Didn't start out well as by the 2nd inning, St Louis had already found 3 of the 5 hits on Whitson's card. In the 3rd, the Padres batted around with the first 5 batters reaching base. McGriff drew a bases loaded walk and then Sheffield had a 2 run double (missed a 1-8 chance for a grand slam). A wild pitch brought in run 4 and a ground out brought in the 5th run. In the bottom of the inning. St louis had a 1-8 hr chance and of course got it (1 of 4 they hit in the series) to make it 5-3. Another run in the 4th cut the lead to one. Reynolds 2 run double in the 5th gave WHitson some breathing room (with the 3rd runner thrown out on one of those 20 splits). padres went on to win 8-4. In the series Gwynn hit 3 triples. That would be Chris 2 and Tony 1. |
