Subject: Chicago @ Pittsburgh

After taking 3 of four from the Bucs in the Windy City, the Cubs were unable to build on that momentum at 3 Rivers.

G1 featured the stylings of the handsome Zane Smith.  The lefty starter (9 3 0 0 1 2) allowed just 5 baserunners (including 1 HBP) in slicing through Chicago's lineup.  Mike LaValliere had an RBI double in the 2nd and an RBI single in the 8th to lead the Pirates' attack against hard-luck starter Greg Maddux (5 6 2 2 0 2)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 0
WP- Smith 12-9, LP- Maddux 12-11
HR- Bonds (27)

G2 provided the fans with far more scoring, but most of that gain was by the hometown Pirates.  I also mistakenly asked Jeff Pico to pitch 2 innings too many (first two innings=0 runs, last 2=6 runs) in relief which allowed Pittsburgh to play add-on late in the game.  Neal Heaton (7 6 4 4 1 3) pitched just well enough to even his record on the season.   Jay Bell's 3 hits not only led the Pirate attack, but also raised his average to .229.  Don Slaught and Rick Schu also had 2 hits for Pittsburgh.  The Cubs' Carmelo Martinez offered a glimpse of things to come by homering and doubling in 3 AB.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 11, Chicago 4
WP- Heaton 7-7, LP- Swindell 12-8
HR- C.Martinez (14), Schu (9), Hatcher (2),

In G3, all the scoring happened in the first 3 innings and then the bullpens shut things down the rest of the way.    The Cubs had a big 5-run inning in the 1st to knock out John Smiley (1/3 4 5 5 1 0), but the Bucs came back with 4 off of former Pirate John Tudor (5 4 4 4 1 1) in the 2nd inning.  Chicago added 2 more tallies in the 3rd inning to conclude the scoring.  The Pirates did put 2 runners on after 2 outs in the 9th, but Ted Power was pleased Luis Salazar fielded Jay Bell's gb(x) to 3B to end the game and earn the righty reliever the save.  Ryne Sandberg added to his impressive season total of RBI by homering and driving in 4 of the Cubs' 7 runs.

Final Score: Chicago 7, Pittsburgh 4
WP- Tudor 4-6, LP- Smiley 7-8, SV- Power (28)
HR- Sandberg (38)

G4 Chicago started their attack much later in this one as Pittsburgh clung to a 2-1 lead after 5 innings.  Chicago broke through with 4 runs in the 6th due to RBI singles by Martinez and Doug Dascenzo, a bases loaded walk to PH Ron Jones, and a Bill Landrum wild pitch.  Martinez had his best game of the season as he went 4-for-4 with a double, HR, and 2 RBI.  (In the series, 'mellow Carmelo' went 7-for-12 with 2 HR, 2 2B, and 2 BB.)  Cubs' closer Power retired 3 of the 4 batters he faced in the 9th to record his 2nd consecutive save and earn Chicago the split in the series.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 3
WP- Akerfelds 5-5, LP- Reed 3-2, SV- Power (29)
HR- Martinez (15)
