Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 19 (and Week 20 CM)

The O’s traveled to Milwaukee and came within a passed ball of a rare four-game sweep.

Game 1:  BAA 5, MLA 2

Rob Deer’s 1st inning double drove in Paul Molitor to give the Brewers an early 1-0 lead, but it was short-lived.  In the second, Juan Samuel’s 3-run homer and a single by Craig Worthington chased Milwaukee starter Kirk McCaskill; Worthington scored  a freebie on a balk, a passed ball, and a wild pitch  by reliever Mike Norris.  In the 5th, the O’s took a 5-1 lead on an RBI double by Cal Ripken, although Ripken fell for the hidden ball trick and was caught off second to kill the rally.  (Once again, Strat-O-Matic does something I hadn’t seen before.)  Other than a solo homer by BJ Surhoff in the 9th, that was the end of the scoring for this game.

Game 2: BAA 4, MLA 2

After the O’s turned a 1-2-3 double play to defuse a 2nd inning Brewers rally, Baltimore’s Mike Sharperson led off the 3rd with an inside-the-park HR.  Milwaukee tied it in the 6th on a Rob Deer double – but Deer was also nailed by the hidden ball trick (!)   The score remained 1-1 until Sharperson singled in Randy Milligan in the 8th, but Charlie O’Brien’s double off reliever Alan Mills tied the game at 2-2 and sent the game to extra innings.  In the 11th, Brewers catcher Charlie O’Brien failed to catch a 3rd strike, setting up an RBI single by Ripken for the win.

Game 3: BAA 13, MLA 9

Baltimore was off and running in the first, as two steals (by Juan Samuel and Craig Biggio) led to two runs.  No theft was needed in the second, as Worthington’s two-run shot gave the O’s a 4-0 lead.  Ditto for the 3rd inning, as Milligan added another two-run homer.  Ignoring the pattern, Samuel was caught stealing in the 4th just ahead of another homer, this time by Mike Devereaux – but another Biggio steal set up an RBI single by Ripken to make the lead 8-0.  Still in the 4th, Milwaukee starter Tom Edens’ last pitch was a wild one that scored another run that took Baltimore starter Rick Sutcliffe into the bottom of the 4th with a safe 9-0 lead.  Four walks, four hits, and two outs later, Sutcliffe headed for the showers with the lead cut to 9-7.  The Brewers finally retired the O’s without a run in the fifth, although it took an OF assist from Dan Gladden to nail Worthington at the plate; Gladden’s sac fly in the bottom of the inning put the Brewers within one.  In the top of the sixth, a steal by Joe Orsulak helped the O’s get two insurance runs; a third was thwarted when Chris James was out at home on Gladden’s second OF assist.  Two Milwaukee errors gave the O’s another run in the 7th for a 13-8 lead, which was promptly cut to 13-9 when B.J. Surhoff homered in the bottom of the inning.  Breaking every pattern of the game, Brewers reliever Dan Plesac pitched two 1-2-3 innings, but it was too late as newly acquired LOOGY Dan Boone pitched a scoreless ninth and was given the win by the official scorer.

The O’s went 5-for-7 in steal attempts, got 18 hits with at least one from every player, were given seven walks, four errors, and a wild pitch by the Brewers staff, homered three times, and still left 11 men on base.

Game 4: MLA 3, BAA 1 (11 innings)

Maybe it was good pitching by Ben McDonald and Mark Davis, or maybe both teams were exhausted from Game 3.  Each starter allowed just one hit through six innings.  In the top of the 5th, Davis pitched out of a self-inflicted jam (error, walk, wild pitch, intentional walk), but he wasn’t as lucky in the 7th, when he walked in Mickey Tettleton for the game’s first run.  McDonald gave up just three hits in 7+ innings but was deprived of the victory on a passed ball by Craig Biggio with two outs in the bottom of the 9th.  In the bottom of the 11th, a hit-and-run turned into a hit-and-walk-off as Wally Joyner ended the game with a two –run shot.
