Big showdown series in AL West as Mariners take 3 of 4 with some late inning heroics....
Game 1: Mariners win 7-2 in opener as Ken Griffey hits 2 homers including a 3 run blast in the 1st inning...Mariners cruise after that as Julio Franco and Dave Henderson get 2 hits apiece. Kirby Puckett has 2 hits and a homer and Gary Gaetti collects 3 hits allow...Jack Moriss loses his 1st game with the Twins since the trade a few weeks back....
Game 2: Mariners win 6-4 in 10 innings....Minnesota led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th before the Mariners scored 2 runs on a Bo Jackson RBI single and a Hector Villanueva sac fly. The Twins scored 2 runs in the 9th to take a 4-3 lead as PH Junior Ortiz walked and PR Phil Bradley scored on a Luis Polonia triple to tie it up. Bradley then scored on a Brian Holman WP to give the Twins the lead. Normally lights out Rick Aguilera entered for the save and promptly gave up a double to Geno Petralli who then moved to 3rd on a Edgar Martinez groundout. Julio Franco then singled to tie the game after 9. Minnesota then had runners on 2nd/3rd in the 10th with one out before Mike Schooler struck out Shane Mack and Willie Randolph to stop the rally. Bo Jackson then hit a 2 out 2 run homer off of Ron Darling in the 10th to give the Mariners the big win.
Game 3: Minnesota wins a must win game 2-1. Minnesota scored single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings as Sid Fernandez held down the Mariners on 3 hits thru 6 innings. Seattle would make in 2-1 in the 8th as Dave Henderson hit a solo homer. Rick Aguilera then picked up his 36th save pitching a scoreless 9th. Greg Gagne has 3 hits and a homer for the Twins and Ken Griffey collected 2 hits in the loss.
Game 4: Mariners take this one 8-7 in 12 innings...Minnesota got off to a fast start by blasting John Burkett for 6 runs in 4 innings. Leading 6-2, Minnesota brought in mopup man David West who pitched good until things got out of hand in the 8th inning. With 1 out, Jack Clark singled, then Edgar Martinez doubled. Geno Petralli then doubled home 2 runs making the scoring 6-4. Juan Berenguer got Julio Franco to ground out before Gary Wayne entered to face Ken Griffey. Griffey then blasted a 2 run homer to tie the game at 6-6. The game stayed tied at 6 until the 12th inning when Minnesota scored as Nelson Liriano walked and scored on Brian Harper's RBI double. With Eckersley being gassed from 2 prior appearances, Terry Leach entered for the save opportunity. Pinch hitter Jay Buhner then singled before Crime Dog Rex Hudler popped a game winning 2 run homer to end the game.
Game 4 note: Brian Harper goes 6-6 in this game.
So the Twins lose a game in the standings, hanging around now at 7 games back, pending the home series vs the Rangers. |
