Subject: Blue Jays @ Brewers

The Jays perform adequately in a series that got far tougher as it went along....

Game 1: The first of two blowouts -- or what SHOULD have been blowouts.  Week 1 scrap heap pickup Scott Anderson finally made his TOA debut and was excellent: 6 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs.  But even though the Jays outhit Milwaukee 11-4 our lead was a very shaky 1-0 after 8 innings as we turned those hits into LOB and (continuing the trend from the Cincy series) runners galore erased on the bases.  Lance Parrish's 2-run homer in the 9th made the game look like less of a nailbiter than it was.  Final score: 3-0.

========================================

Game 2: Today the advantage in hits (14-4) actually showed up in the run column too.  Todd Stottlemyre went the distance for Toronto, scattering 4 singles and a walk & fanning 8.  Final score: 11-1.  Mitch Webster had 4 hits and 3 stolen bases & Pat Borders drove in 3 runs.

========================================

Game 3: Our pitching staff reverted to typical form as four ineffective hurlers combined on a disgusting 16-baserunner effort.  Down 5-1 after 4 innings, the Jays offense finally woke up in a big way.  The first 8 batters of the TOA 5th reached base and 6 scored (plus yet ANOTHER runner gunned down) but our sudden 7-5 lead was erased by more rotten pitching.  Toronto finally scored the winning run in the 9th without a hit (walk, sb+error, sac fly) and escaped with an 8-7 victory.  Duane Ward wasn't exactly unhittable but he was the only TOA pitcher to avoid giving up a run, and got his 6th win of the year.

========================================

Game 4: Started off well enough against ex-Blue Jay arsonist Mark Davis with a pair of first-inning solo homers, but Pat Combs was on the mound so we were losing seconds later.  After Combs' truncated (0.1 IP) start, Juan Agosto & Tom Henke combined for 7.2 innings of decent relief (3 hits, 3 BB, 7 Ks) but the 2 runs Agosto allowed were costly.  Those, and the 11-4 "advantage" we racked up in the LOB category.  Jays lose, 5-4, in a game that should have been easily won.

Four MLA pitchers combined for double-digits in both walks (10) and strikeouts (11) and allowed 3 gophers but Toronto's non-existent clutch performance let them off the hook and Davis wound up getting the win by allowing 12 baserunners (but only 3 scored) and 2 homers in 5.1 IP.
