Game 1 Larry Walker smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL Cubs by the score of 15 to 9 at Wrigley Field.
Walker provided much of the offense. He launched a three-run homer in the 1st inning, slapped a single which scored a run in the 6th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 9th inning. Montreal provided plenty of action in the 5th inning when they had 5 runs on 4 hits and the 9th inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits. Montreal had 18 hits overall, while Chicago NL had 13.
John Wetteland (6-6) went 5 innings allowing 8 runs for the victory. Mike Bielecki (10-5) was tagged with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. Game 2 Greg Swindell didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the league door-mat Montreal Expos 3 to 2.
Swindell (14-7) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't give up much, just 2 hits and no walks in 6 innings. The left-handed Swindell lost his no-hit bid when Spike Owen doubled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Chicago NL ended up with 8 hits for the game while Montreal had 4.
Swindell got help from Paul Assenmacher who was credited with his 12th save. The loss was charged to John Farrell (1-3). He gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. Game 3 Chicago NL Cubs broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 4 to 3 win over the dreadful Montreal Expos and sending their hometown fans home smiling.
The game was won by Chicago NL with a run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Luis Salazar was hit by a pitch. Joe Girardi followed and he drew a walk. Ron Jones then laced a base-knock to load the bases. Jerome Walton followed next and he delivered a single making Chicago NL the winners and sending the 47,301 fans home happy. Both teams ended up with 10 hits on the night.
Jeff Pico (2-2) allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the victory. John Mitchell (3-7) took the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2 hits in 1/3 of an inning.
With the win Chicago NL now has a record of 80-61. With this loss, Montreal has a 4-6 record of late, 45-96, worst in the division overall. Game 4 48,432 fans were treated to a fine game at Wrigley Field as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Chicago NL Cubs won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Steve Wilson (7-4) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He went 2 innings surrendering 4 hits and no walks. Chicago NL had a total of 8 hits for the game.
Ted Power preserved the game for Wilson , recording his 30th. Bill Sampen (2-7) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 2 innings.
