Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 21 (plus Week 22 CM)
The unpredictable O’s split a late season series with the first-place Jays. P.S. Good luck in Week 22 to you actual contenders. Game 1: BAA 6, TOA 4 Small ball helped the Orioles score in the first as Craig Biggio walked, was bunted over to second, took third on a groundout, and scored on a Mickey Tettleton single. Two wild pitches by Dave Stieb helped the O’s to another run in the second without a hit. Meanwhile, Jim Abbott held Toronto scoreless through five innings, thanks to two double plays and a bunch of “Great play by…” moments. The Jays cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth but left the bases loaded thanks to Abbott’s own “Unbelievable play by….” In the seventh, Pat Borders’ leadoff double chased Abbott and gave the Blue Jays the gift of facing a usage-depleted Orioles bullpen. Tony Fernandez put the Jays on top with a two-RBI triple and scored on a Kelly Gruber single for a 4-2 Toronto lead. In the 8th, Joe Orsulak hit an RBI single off Stieb’s 132nd and last pitch, and Cory Snyder greeted reliever Juan Agosto with a decisive three-run homer. Orioles closer Gregg Olson survived a shaky ninth for his 25th save. Game 2: TOA 9, BAA 4 Toronto wasted little time taking control of this game, going up 5-0 in the second on home runs by John Olerud and Manny Lee. In the fourth, the O’s got a run on back-to-back doubles by Juan Samuel and Brady Anderson, but Baltimore starter Jeff Ballard gave up two more homers (to Borders and Mitch Webster) for a 7-1 Jays lead. Fernandez doubled in two insurance runs in the seventh, but they proved unnecessary as Toronto’s Tom Candiotti held the Orioles to two runs and six hits in 7 1/3 innings. Baltimore rallied in the ninth to make this loss look less lopsided than it really was. Game 3: BAA 5, TOA 1 After yielding a first inning dinger to Juan Samuel for a quick 1-0 deficit, Toronto’s David Wells quickly settled in for a pitchers’ duel with Charles Nagy… Charles Nagy? The Orioles rookie with an ERA of 6.94 was only eligible to pitch due to his high ERA, but he yielded just two hits while striking out 10 in 6 1/3 IP. It wasn’t until Nagy’s three-walk 6th that the Blue Jays tied the game 1-1; at that point each team had just two hits. Baltimore chased Wells in the 7th as a (rare) well-executed hit-and-run by Cal Ripken set up a two-run rally. Samuel’s steal in the 8th and Biggio’s in the 9th may have angered the Jays, but each led to an insurance run that proved unneeded. Game 4: TOA 5, BAA 1 Late season callup Mike Dunne threw a pivotal wild pitch that set up Joe Carter’s RBI single for a 1-0 first inning lead. Carter struck again with another RBI single in the 3rd. The O’s got on the board in the 4th thanks to Joe Orsulak’s solo homer, but Olerud hit another solo shot in the 6th for a 3-1 lead. Gruber’s leadoff triple in the 7th triggered a two-run rally for the final margin. The win went to late season callup Scott Anderson, who went the distance despite going 50 pitches past his comfort zone. Stat of the series: LOB – BAA 13, TOA 32 |
