Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox
After choking away the opener, the Jays take the next 3 in a sloppily-played series that featured generally poor pitching and sab-par defense on both sides.... Game 1: Boston's Tom Bolton held the Jays to 1 run (0 earned) in 7 IP and didn't get the win -- but his team did after Glenallen Hill's miraculous 2-out 9th inning homer for Toronto was immediately followed by a far more routine Toronto choke. Jody Reed's 2-out double in the bottom of the frame was preceded by a pair of free passes, with Mike Kingery scoring the losing run. Final score: 3-2. Bolton, Aase & Candelaria combined on a 4-hitter. ===================================== Game 2: Willie Blair opposed Roger Clemens in what should have been a mismatch, and sort of was. Clemens was unceremoniously yanked in the 6th so that Aase could stink up the joint, while Blair (in his first career start) tossed 6 shutout innings. With the score 7-0 in the 7th, Blair & reliever Juan Agosto were suddenly dismembered and closer Duane Ward was no better. But the BOA bullpen wasn't either, and the Jays hung on for a 9-6 win. ===================================== Game 3: The Jays out-baserunnered the Sox 17-10 and also got 3 Boston errors, but the game lasted 12 innings thanks to our 11-4 LOB advantage and because Ward choked again by allowing 2 bottom of the 9th runs on back to back triples with the Sox down to their final out. Toronto loaded the bases in the 12th with 1 out and got only a meager sac fly but fortunately that was enough. Final score: 6-5. Chuck Cary and a surprisingly competent Pat Combs were the long-gone starters. ===================================== Game 4: Another contest featuring little in the way of good pitching, mainly because Jimmy Key started and was used by HAL as a punching bag like always; but somehow Mike Boddicker was even more hittable than Key. Toronto took an early lead and never trailed, though not for lack of trying. Toronto scored 7, LOBbed 11 more, and won by the count of 7-4 which opens a small amount of daylight in the A.L. East race. Alan |
