Game 1 David Cone threw a 2 hitter at Shea Stadium as the New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos by the count of 3 to 1.
Cone(13-7) escaped virtually unscathed against the Montreal hitters. He allowed only 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again.
The losing pitcher was Dennis Martinez(10-13). New York NL now has a record of a division leading 91-56. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 3-7 lately, 48-99, worst in the division overall. Game 2 Dwight Gooden hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI at Shea Stadium as the Montreal Expos lost a heartbreaker to incredible New York NL Mets by the score of 6 to 5.
The deciding run was scored by New York NL in the 9th. After an out was recorded, Darryl Strawberry banged out a single. Kevin McReynolds came next and he drew a walk. One out later, Domingo Ramos came to the plate and delivered a single giving New York NL the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. New York NL finished with 13 hits while Montreal ended up with 9.
Ken Dayley(8-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Mel Rojas(2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. Game 3 The smoking-hot New York NL Mets and the Montreal Expos locked up in an exciting one-run game at Shea Stadium. The final score was the smoking-hot New York NL Mets 3, the Montreal Expos 2.
Ken Dayley(9-2) was the winning pitcher in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1 and 2/3 innings. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Dayley got relief help from John Franco who gained credit for his 38th save. Jamie Moyer(3-2) was tagged with the loss in relief.
Steve Bivens was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.' Game 4 The blistering-hot New York NL Mets easily topped the Montreal Expos; the final score was 12 to 6.
New York NL claimed the early lead in the first inning as they scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. Overall New York NL out-hit Montreal 15 to 10.
