Subject: Blue Jays @ Orioles

After the disaster at home against Milwaukee, the Jays show uncharacteristic resiliency on the road in Baltimore as our 1990 season ends one final, fatal '20' shy of a sweep....

Game 1: One extremely likely goat (Pat Combs) was taken off the hook by two very UNlikely heroes: Jason Grimsley took over for Combs during Baltimore's 3-run third and went on to post 4.1 scoreless though highly eventful relief innings -- and his first win! -- while much-maligned center fielder Junior Felix came up with 3 hits including a home run and gunned a runner at the plate in the bottom of the 9th.  The Jays overcome Combs' rotten start plus 11 LOB and finally come out on top by the count of 5-3.  Lance Parrish also contributed 3 hits during the first of four outstanding games for the geriatric backstop.

Game 2: David Wells' no-hitter was broken up by a botched x-play in the 7th, but Wells wound up with his best outing of the year, a 2-hit shutout with just 1 walk.  Final score: 7-0.  Tim Hulett, replacing exhausted MVP candidate Kelly Gruber through most of this series, helped Parrish lead the attack.  Wells' fine performance today stands in stark contrast to the rest of his bitterly disappointing 1990 season, as he posted a W-L record, ERA and all other numbers far worse than his card merited, which helped unsettle an already very shaky Blue Jay rotation.

Game 3: One choke too many finally nailed the coffin shut.  Todd Stottlemyre blew every bit of a 5-1 lead, Duane Ward coughed up his most costly gopher of the year, and the tying run was terminated at the plate in the 8th on yet another baserunning split card of 20.  Jays lose, far more than just a game, by the score of 6-5.  Our 19-12 advantage in total bases, including Greg Myers' 1st major league homer in his second MLB at bat, was not enough to offset our horrible luck in the clutch although we did vanquish Baltimore wunderkind Anthony Telford in the first inning.

Game 4: Likely too late, Dave Stieb and the Jays rebounded and teed off to the tune of 23 total bases against Jim Abbott & 3 Oriole relievers.  After a very slow start (down 1-0 after 3) the offense got busy at last in the 4th and Stieb took care of the O's the rest of the way.  Final score: 11-3.  Parrish had 3 more hits, another homer, and 4 RBI.  Even John Olerud stopped surgically finding the outs in his oft-rolled loaded 3 column, and notched his 11th homer.

Alan
