The Cubs traveled to LA for the final road series of 1990 with very slim hopes of overtaking the Mets in the NL East. G1 The Dodgers found Cubs' starter Mike Harkey (5 8 5 4 1 4) to be no mystery whatsoever as they scored 5 times in the first 3 innings. Lenny Harris' 3rd inning, 2-out, bases-loaded double was the big, early blow, and Harris also came around to score to complete the 3rd frame's run total. In addition to scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 more in the opener, Harris' 2 singles and the 3rd inning double raised his season average to .316. Mark Langston (7 6 2 2 0 6) edged one win closer to double figures in the victory column. This Cubs' loss in the opener secured the NL EAST crown for the New York
Mets. Final Score: Los Angeles 7, Chicago 2 WP- Langston 9-16, LP- Harkey 10-7 HR- Sierra (11) G2 With the division title firmly out of their grasp, the Cubs continued to stumble at Dodger Stadium. This time it took LA 12 innings, but once again they beat Chicago. The 9th inning was interesting in this game since the score was 2-1 in favor of the Dodgers after 8 complete innings. Ryne Sandberg's 2nd longball of the game- a leadoff HR in the 9th- tied it at 2-2, and Mark Grace singled, stole 2B, went to 3B on a wild pitch and trotted home on Andre Dawson's sac fly to complete the Cubs' 9th inning rally. Now that Chicago was up 3-2, Los Angeles started its half of the 9th against Paul Assenmacher with a walk to Tom Brookens, a single by Eddie Murray, and an error by Shawon Dunston on the same play that put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no
outs. Reliever Darrel Akerfelds got PH Tony Pena to ground out, but uncorked a wild pitch during PH Rick Dempsey's strikeout that tied the score, 3-3. Both teams got singles in the 10th, but both runners were erased on the bases (one by pickoff, one by double play grounder). In the 11th, both teams followed a single with an RBI double (Dawson and Murray), but 1 run was all either team could muster, and the two teams took a 4-4 tie into the 12th. After Chicago stranded Jack Howell's 2-out walk, LA finished the proceedings when Omar Vizquel singled, was sacrificed to 2nd base, went to 3B on a wild pitch before scoring on Gerald Young's single over the drawn-in OF to walk off to a win. For the 2nd consecutive game, Eddie Murray had 2 hits for the Dodgers. Final Score: Los Angeles 5, Chicago 4, 12 innings WP- Darwin 7-8, LP- Jeffcoat 6-5 HR- Sandberg 2
(44) G3 Chicago finally got a bit of satisfaction in the third contest, but it was of little help to John Tudor (5 4 0 0 2 2). Despite the hard-luck lefthander departing with a 1-0 lead, Brad Komminsk's 2-run HR in the 6th off Akerfelds enabled LA to own a 2-1 advantage after 6 innings. In the top of the 7th, Dawson singled and stole 2nd before Joe Girardi legged out an infield single and stole 2nd also (off Jim Deshaies 6 2/3 6 3 3 2 2) before Shawon Dunston's RBI single and Sandberg's sac fly gave Chicago the lead again, 3-2. It took 4 relievers to cover the last 3 innings, but the Cubs' bullpen made the 3-2 lead stand, and the Cubs finally gained a victory in the series. LA outhit Chicago, 9-6, and outLOBbed the Cubs, 8-3, but Chicago used the stolen base to its advantage with 3 swipes in the crucial 7th inning. Leadoff man, Kal Daniels had 3 of the Dodgers' 9
safeties. Final Score: Chicago 3, Los Angeles 2 WP- Akerfelds 5-6, LP- Deshaies 7-16, SV- Jeffcoat (1) HR- Komminsk (6) G4 The Dodgers looked like the playoff contender in this series, and the finale was emphatic evidence of that. Ramon Martinez (7 3 0 0 0 4) could have thrown 15 innings and the Cubs still wouldn't have touched him, and Dodger hitters had a field day off Cubs' ace Greg Maddux (7 2/3 10 8 5 5 7). Gerald Young and Tony Pena each collected 3 hits which raised their season averages to .219 and .218 respectfully. Eddie Murphy finished the series 7-for-16 with another 2-hit game which left his average at a cool .333 for 1990. Even leadoff hitter Tommy Herr decided to do something different as he legged out his first triple of the season. Gary Varsho had 2 of Chicago's 3 hits in the whitewash. Final Score: Los Angeles 8,
Chicago 0 WP- R.Martinez 14-5, LP- G.Maddux 16-11 HR- none *On a side note, this current Cubs' run has been fun and historic as it's the first time in Smiley that Chicago's NL club has had 3 consecutive years of 88 or more wins. Also, with 4 games in Shea to be played, this is now the most successful 2 year stretch (1989-90) in Cubs history with 191 wins so far. It's been fun for me to rebuild the franchise in the late 80's, and we'll see if we can keep it going the next couple of seasons on the North Side. |
