Game 1 Vince Coleman had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals bested the Montreal Expos 9 to 5 at Busch Stadium.
The St. Louis fans enjoyed the offense provided by Coleman. He banged out a single in the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit in the 4th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning and tripled scoring a run in the 7th inning. St. Louis ended up with 17 hits for the game while Montreal had 7.
The winning pitcher was Jose Nunez (4-2) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. The loss was charged to Jeff Shaw (1-7). He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings of work. Game 2 At Busch Stadium the Montreal Expos offense put up 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 9th inning and easily handled the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 8 to 4.
Montreal won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 4 runners on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Dave Gallagher who deflated the crowd as he doubled clearing the bases. Montreal had a total of 10 hits for the game.
The win went to Tommy Greene (4-16) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Larry Andersen (4-3) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings. Game 3 In a game at Busch Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals got by the awful Montreal Expos by the score of 4 to 1.
Montreal was unable to claim the lead after St. Louis went ahead in the 6th inning plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. Overall St. Louis out-hit Montreal 12 to 5.
Andy McGaffigan (3-7) got the win allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Lee Smith recorded the save, his 31st. Dave Lapoint (3-13) was the losing pitcher. Game 4 Andres Galarraga blasted a homerun as the Montreal Expos topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 4 to 2 at Busch Stadium.
Montreal scored 2 runs in the 4th inning. After an out was recorded, Galarraga started the rally when he delivered a single. Ron Karkovice stepped into the batter's box and he clubbed a two-run home run. Carlos Baerga was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. John Wetteland followed, but he was set down on strikes. Montreal banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.
Wetteland (7-6) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Scott Ruskin earned the save, his 17th. Joe Magrane (8-15) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
