Game 1 Larry Jansen came through with a solid 9 innings as the St. Louis AL Browns defeated the Boston AL Red Sox by a score of 2 to 0 at Sportsman's Park.
St. Louis AL jumped on top of Boston AL in the bottom of the 2nd inning plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. That early scoring was all that Jansen (6-18) needed. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.
Frank Fanovich (2-7) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. 'He had his 'A' game tonight,' St. Louis AL 's manager said of Jansen. 'Very impressive performance.' Game 2 28,022 fans watched an exciting game at Sportsman's Park. The St. Louis AL Browns topped the Boston AL Red Sox by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Boston AL was unable to recover after St. Louis AL went ahead in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring one runner on 3 hits. Clyde Vollmer banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Vern Stephens came to bat and lined a one-base hit. Dick Kokos then laced a base-knock. Jack Graham was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Boston AL had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Vic Raschi (14-11) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Jack Kramer gained credit for his 5th save. The losing pitcher was Mel Parnell (16-9). He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks. Game 3 Shortstop Vern Stephens homered and had 5 RBI as the St. Louis AL Browns defeated the Boston AL Red Sox by the score of 10 to 6 at Sportsman's Park.
It was a good day for St. Louis AL thanks to Stephens. He ripped a single resulting in a run in the 3rd inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 5th inning and stroked a base-hit bringing in two base runners in the 8th inning. St. Louis AL had 13 hits overall, while Boston AL had 10.
The win went to Jack Kramer (6-8) who allowed 3 runs in 3 innings. Frank Quinn (1-2) was given the loss in relief. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 2 innings.
Left fielder Ted Williams rocketed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI but it wasn't enough for Boston AL . Game 4 The Boston AL Red Sox bested the St. Louis AL Browns by a 7 to 4 score at Sportsman's Park.
Mickey Harris (13-8) gave Boston AL a solid outing. He was reached for 7 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings and served up 2 'big flies'. Boston AL ended up with 13 hits for the game while St. Louis AL had 8.
